Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Companion Flange

SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS
Companion Flange:
Vertical Runout 0.10 mm (0.0039 inch) Or Less
Lateral Runout 0.10 mm (0.0039 inch) Or Less

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Companion Flange To:
Drive Pinion* 108-235 Nm (80-174 ft. lbs.)
Propeller Shaft 74 Nm (54 ft. lbs.)

*To properly torque the companion flange to the drive pinion the drive pinion preload must be adjusted as follows:
Install companion flange and torque to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.)
Using a torque wrench, measure drive pinion preload using backlash of the drive pinion and ring gear.
Preload at starting:
- New Bearing 1.1-1.7 Nm (9.6-14.8 inch lbs.)
- Reused Bearing 0.6-0.9 Nm (5.2-7.8 inch lbs.)
If the preload is greater than specified value, replace the bearing spacer.
If the preload is less than specified value, retighten the nut with a force of 13 Nm (9 ft. lbs.) at a time until the specified preload is reached.
If the maximum torque of 235 Nm (174 ft. lbs.) is exceeded while retightening the nut, replace the bearing spacer and repeat the preload procedure. DO NOT loosen the pinion nut to reduce the preload.
