EXHAUST - SULFUR SMELL OR "ROTTEN EGG SMELL" FROM EXHAUST

FORD:

2001-2002 GRAND MARQUIS

ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit a "rotten egg" or "sulfur" odor from the exhaust. This may be present at all times after vehicle warms up, or intermittently on a warm/hot restart. This may be caused by the Catalytic Converters.

ACTION

Replace the Catalytic Converters with Part Numbers 1W7Z-5E212-ZA (right side) and 1W7Z-5E212-ZB (left side). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Run the KOEO, KOER tests to ensure no other faults present, repair any issues found.

2. If the concern is still present replace the Catalytic Converters with Part Numbers 1W7Z-5E212-ZA (right side) and 1W7Z-5E212-ZB (left side). For replacement procedure follow Section 309-00 of the Workshop Manual.

3. Install an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modification performed.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
