Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection

To check fuel pump outlet pressure, proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect main fuel hose from fuel pipe, then connect suitable pressure gauge. Cover fuel hose with a cloth when disconnecting hose, since pressurized fuel will escape from connection.
3. Reconnect battery ground cable.
4. Turn ignition switch On, then connect jumper wire to fuel pump short circuit terminal, Fig. 30, to start pump. Measure outlet pressure.
5. Outlet pressure should be 50-71 psi on 1985 models, 64-85 psi on 1986-88 non-turbocharged models, or 71-92 psi on 1987 turbocharged models.
