DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (4JJ3 without DPD)

Note

  • If there is electromagnetic interference in the vehicle speed sensor, this DTC may be set.

1. Engine control system check

Refer to "51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 without DPD) Diagnostic system check-engine controls".

2. Prioritized DTC check

1) Connect the scan tool.

2) Turn OFF the ignition switch for 1 minute or more.

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Is DTC P0219 set at the same time?

Yes

Go to DTC P0219 diagnosis.

Refer to "51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 without DPD) DTC P0219 Engine Overspeed Condition".

No

=>Go to Vehicle speed check.

3. Vehicle speed check

1) Operate the vehicle while observing the Vehicle Speed parameter on the scan tool. Does the Vehicle Speed parameter display the correct vehicle speed?

Yes

Go to Intermittent conditions of engine.

Refer to "202.Engine 15D.Symptom(4JJ3 without DPD) intermittent conditions of engine".

No

=>Go to Inspection for open circuit in vehicle speed sensor power supply circuit.

4. Inspection for open circuit in vehicle speed sensor power supply circuit

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor harness connector (E37).

3) Connect a test lamp between the ignition power supply circuit (pin 1 of E30) and the body ground.

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

4) Turn ON the ignition switch. Does the test lamp illuminate?

Yes

=>Go to Vehicle speed sensor signal voltage check.

No

Repair the open circuit or high resistance in the ignition power supply circuit between the METER(IG1) 5A fuse and the vehicle speed sensor (pin 1 of E37). Inspect the METER(IG1) 5A fuse first.

=>Go to Repair verification.

5. Vehicle speed sensor signal voltage check

1) Observe the Vehicle Speed parameter on the scan tool while intermittently connecting and disconnecting a test lamp between the vehicle speed sensor signal circuit (pin 3 of E37) and the battery power supply. Does the Vehicle Speed parameter change when a test lamp is disconnected?

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Yes

=>Go to Inspection for open circuit in vehicle speed sensor ground circuit.

No

=>Go to Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in vehicle speed sensor signal circuit.

6. Inspection for open circuit in vehicle speed sensor ground circuit

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Connect a test lamp between the ignition power supply circuit and the ground circuit (pins 1 and 2 of E30).

Refer to "LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch. Does the test lamp illuminate?

Yes

=>Go to Vehicle speed sensor harness connector inspection.

No

Repair the open circuit or high resistance in the ground circuit between the vehicle speed sensor (pin 2 of E37) and the body ground.

7. Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in vehicle speed sensor signal circuit

1) Inspect the signal circuit between the ECM (pin 22 of C8) and the vehicle speed sensor (pin 3 of E37) for the following. Is the result normal?

  • Open circuit
  • Short to the battery power supply circuit or short to the ignition power supply circuit
  • Short to ground
  • High resistance

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Yes

=>Go to ECM harness connector inspection.

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

8. Vehicle speed sensor harness connector inspection

1) Inspect for poor connections at the vehicle speed sensor harness connector (pins 1, 2, and 3 of E37). Is the connection status normal?

Refer to "LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Yes

=>Go to VSS components inspection.

No

Repair the connections as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

9. VSS components inspection

1) Inspect the vehicle speed sensor, drive gear, driven gear, and output shaft for the following. Is the result normal?

  • Damage to the vehicle speed sensor, drive gear, or driven gear
  • Loose or improperly installed vehicle speed sensor, drive gear, or driven gear
  • Damage to the teeth of the transmission output shaft
  • Excessive play in the transmission output shaft
  • Damage to the teeth of the transfer output shaft
  • Excessive play in the transfer output shaft

Yes

Replace the vehicle speed sensor.

Refer to "5.Transmission, Transaxle 5Z.Transmission Electrical Control(MVL) vehicle speed sensor removal".

Refer to "5.Transmission, Transaxle 5Z.Transmission Electrical Control(MVL) vehicle speed sensor installation".

=>Go to Repair verification.

No

Repair or replace as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

10. ECM harness connector inspection

1) Inspect for poor connections at the ECM harness connector (pin 19 of C61). Is the connection status normal?

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 without DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Yes

=>Go to ECM replacement.

No

Repair the connections as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

11. ECM replacement

Note

  • Perform programming after replacing the ECM.

12. Repair verification

1) Clear the DTC with a scan tool.

2) Turn OFF the ignition switch for 1 minute or more.

3) Operate the vehicle while observing the Vehicle Speed parameter on the scan tool. Does the Vehicle Speed parameter display the correct vehicle speed?

Yes

Observe the DTC information with a scan tool.

No

=>Go to Prioritized DTC check.
