Engine stalls when shifted to D or in R position

DESCRIPTION

•  Engine stalls when shifting from N or P position to D or R position at idle.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

•  The malfunction is on the engine control side (e.g. electronic controlled throttle system). Otherwise, the malfunction is in the input/turbine speed sensor (engine sometimes starts) or the TCC circuit (engine always stalls).

Note

•  Before following the troubleshooting steps, make sure that the Automatic Transaxle On-Board Diagnostic and Automatic Transaxle Basic Inspection are conducted. (See BASIC INSPECTION [AY6A-EL, AY6AX-EL].)

Diagnostic procedure

STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	• Go to symptom troubleshooting No.5 “ENGINE STALLS-AFTER START/AT IDLE”. (See NO.5 ENGINE STALLS-AFTER START/AT IDLE [MZI-3.7].) • Is the engine control system normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
1		No	Repair or replace any malfunctioning parts according to the inspection results.
2	• Perform the stall test. (See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST [AY6A-EL, AY6AX-EL].) • Is the stall speed within the specified?	Yes	Inspect for bending, damage, corrosion or kinks of the oil cooler pipes. If normal, replace the control valve body. (See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AY6A-EL, AY6AX-EL].) If problem remains, replace the transaxle. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AY6A-EL, AY6AX-EL].)
2		No	Replace the torque converter. (See TORQUE CONVERTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AY6A-EL, AY6AX-EL].)
3	• Verify test results. ― If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms. ― If malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Bulletins and/or On-line Repair Information and perform repair or diagnosis. • If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting completed. • If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, replace the TCM.
