DESCRIPTION
|
• Performance is poor under load (such as power down when climbing hills).

• Drive-by-wire control system operates with brake override system
• Poor fuel quality
• Air leakage from intake-air system
• Air cleaner restriction
• Restriction in intake-air system
• Vacuum leakage
• Clutch slippage (MTX)

• Engine overheating
• Intake air temperature is too hot
• Erratic signal to PCM
• CKP sensor and teeth of the crankshaft pulley
• Spark plug malfunction
• Improper operation of drive-by-wire control system
• Restriction in exhaust system
• Inadequate fuel pressure
• Improper operation of variable tumble control
• Improper operation of A/C system
• Purge solenoid valve malfunction
• EVAP control system malfunction

CONFIRM DRIVE-BY-WIRE CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATES WITH BRAKE OVERRIDE SYSTEM
• Retrieve the PCM DTC using the M-MDS.
• Is the DTC P2299:00 present?

Yes

Go to the applicable DTC inspection. (drive-by-wire control system operates with brake override system.)

No
|
Go to the next step.

INSPECT RELATED PART CONDITION
• Inspect the following:
• Is there any malfunction?
|
Yes
|
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
Repeat Step 2.

No
|
Go to the next step.

VERIFY PCM DTC
• If the engine stalls:
• If the engine does not stall:
• Are there any continuous memory DTCs displayed?

Yes
|
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
(See DTC TABLE [MZR 1.3, MZR 1.5].)

No
|
Go to the next step.

VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS OVERHEATING
• Is the engine overheating?
|
Yes
|
Go to the symptom troubleshooting “NO.17 COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS-OVERHEATING”.

No

Go to the next step.

VERIFY CURRENT INPUT SIGNAL STATUS
• Access the following PIDs using the M-MDS:
• Monitor the each PID while driving the vehicle.
• Are all PIDs normal?

Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
APP1, APP2 PIDs are not as specified:
• Inspect if the output signal from the APP sensor changes smoothly.
TP1, TP2 PIDs are not as specified:
• Inspect if the output signal from the TP sensor changes smoothly.
RPM PID is not as specified:
• Inspect the CKP sensor and related wiring harness for vibration or an intermittent open/short circuit.
MAF PID is not as specified:
• Inspect for an intermittent open circuit of the MAF sensor and the related wiring harness.
IAT PID is not as specified:
• Inspect for air suction in the intake-air system.
VSS PID is not as specified:
• Inspect for intermittent open circuit of the VSS and related wiring harness. (ATX)
• Inspect the ABS wheel-speed sensor. (MTX, CVT)
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

VISUALLY INSPECT CKP SENSOR AND PULSE WHEEL
• Visually inspect the CKP sensor and teeth of the crankshaft pulley.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes
|
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

No
|
Go to the next step.

INSPECT CKP SENSOR AIR GAP
• Measure the gap between CKP sensor and teeth of the crankshaft pulley.
• Is the gap within the specification?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
No
|
Replace the crankshaft pulley.
|

|
VERIFY SPARK PLUG CONDITION
• Inspect the spark plug condition.
• Is the spark plug wet, covered with carbon or grayish white?
|
Yes
|
Spark plug is wet or covered with carbon:
• Inspect for fuel leakage from fuel injector.
Spark plug is grayish white:
• Inspect the fuel injector for restriction.
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

No
|
Install the spark plugs on original cylinders, then go to the next step.
|

INSPECT THROTTLE BODY FOR CLOGGING
• Visually inspect the throttle valve.
• Are any foreign material adhere to around throttle valve?

Yes
|
Clean the throttle valve.
|
No
|
Go to the next step.

INSPECT DRIVE-BY-WIRE CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION
• Perform the Drive-by-wire Control System Inspection.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes
|
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
|
No
|
Go to the next step.

INSPECT EXHAUST SYSTEM
• Visually inspect the exhaust system part.
• Is there any malfunction?
|
Yes
|
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

No
|

INSPECT FUEL LINE PRESSURE
• Install the fuel pressure gauge between fuel pipe and fuel distributor.
• Inspect the fuel line pressure.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes
|
Zero or low:
• Inspect the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump unit related wiring harness.
(See RELAY INSPECTION.)
• Inspect the fuel line for restriction.
High:
• Replace the fuel pump unit. (pressure regulator malfunction)

No
|
Go to the next step.

INSPECT VARIABLE TUMBLE CONTROL OPERATION
• Perform the Variable Tumble Control Operation Inspection.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes
|
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
|
No
|
Go to the next step.

DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS A/C SYSTEM OR OTHER
• Connect the pressure gauges to the A/C low side and high side pressure lines.
• Turn the A/C on and measure the low side and high side pressures.
• Are the pressures within the specification?
(See REFRIGERANT PRESSURE CHECK.)

Yes
|
Go to the next step.

No
|
If the A/C is always on:
• Go to the symptom troubleshooting “NO.24 A/C IS ALWAYS ON OR A/C COMPRESSOR RUNS CONTINUOUSLY”.
For other symptoms:
• Inspect the following:
• Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

INSPECT A/C CUT-OFF CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION
• Perform the A/C Cut-off Control System Inspection.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes
|
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

No
|

DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM OR OTHER
• Disconnect the vacuum hose between purge solenoid valve and intake manifold from purge solenoid valve side.
• Plug the open end of the vacuum hose.
• Drive the vehicle.
• Does the engine condition improve?

Yes
|
Inspect the purge solenoid valve (stuck open mechanically).
• If the purge solenoid valve has a malfunction:
• If the purge solenoid valve is normal:

No
|
Go to the next step.

VISUALLY INSPECT CMP SENSOR AND PULSE WHEEL
• Visually inspect the CMP sensor and projections of the camshaft pulley.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes

Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

• Perform the EGR Control System Inspection.
• Is there any malfunction?

INSPECT VARIABLE VALVE TIMING CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION
• Perform the Variable Valve Timing Control System Operation Inspection.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes

INSPECT ENGINE COMPRESSION
• Inspect the engine compression.
• Is there any malfunction?

INSPECT IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS PCV VALVE OR OTHER
• Inspect the PCV valve operation.
• Is there any malfunction?

Yes

Replace the PCV valve and the oil separator as a single unit.

No

Inspect the following:
• Brake system for dragging
• Clutch (MTX)
• Shift point (ATX, CVT)
• Valve timing
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.

Verify test results.
• If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms.
• If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Information and perform the repair or diagnosis.
