High engine oil consumption

DESCRIPTION
•  Engine oil consumption is excessive.
•  Engine oil in the intake-air system.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Visibly damaged or worn parts
•  Loose or missing nuts or bolts
•  Use of the wrong type of engine oil.
•  Poor sealing at crankshaft front seal.
•  Poor sealing at Oil cooler
•  Faulty PCV system.
―  Hoses or ventilation or breather valves are blocked. This causes excessive pressure in the crankcase which causes more oil to enter the combustion chamber.
―  PCV oil separator is faulty and engine oil can enter the combustion chamber through the intake manifold.
•  Oil leakage from turbocharger
•  Damaged gaskets or mating surfaces.
―  Cylinder head gasket is damaged or mating faces are warped.
•  Valve stem seals.
―  Engine oil can enter the combustion chamber between the valve stem and the valve stem guide.
•  Damaged cylinder liners or excessive clearance of engine components.
―  Pistons
―  Piston rings (clearance in groove and end gap)
―  Cylinder liners
•  Blocked or damaged crankcase vent oil separator.

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

RESULTS

ACTION

1
VISUALLY INSPECT RELATED PART CONDITION
•  Visually inspect the following:
Mechanical:

Go to the next step.
4
INSPECT PCV VALVE
•  Inspect the PCV valve.
•  Is the PCV valve normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Clean or replace the upper cylinder head cover.
5
VISUALLY INSPECT TURBOCHARGER TURBINE HOUSING FOR OIL LEAKAGE
•  Remove parts necessary to inspect the turbocharger without remove the turbocharger.
•  Is any engine oil found inside the turbocharger turbine housing?
Yes
If the excessive amount of oil is found:
•  Replace the turbocharger.
If the small amount of oil is found:
•  Wipe oil off of the vehicle, then go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
6
VISUALLY INSPECT TURBOCHARGER COMPRESSOR HOUSING FOR OIL LEAKAGE
•  Is any engine oil found inside the turbocharger compressor housing?
Yes
Wipe oil off of the vehicle.
•  Reinstall all removed parts in Step 5, then go to the next step.
No
Turbocharger is normal.
•  Reinstall all removed parts in Step 5, then go to the next step.
7
INSPECT FRONT SIDE OIL SEAL FOR OIL LEAKAGE
•  Visually inspect the front and camshaft oil seals.
•  Are there any oil leakage detected?
Yes
Replace the suspect oil seal.
No
Go to the next step.
8
INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
•  Remove the cylinder head.
•  Visually inspect cylinder head gasket and mating surface.
•  Is there any damaged or mating face wrapped?
Yes
Replace the cylinder head gasket, and/or clean the mating surface as necessary.
No
Go to the next step.
9
INSPECT REAR OIL SEAL FOR OIL LEAKAGE
•  Remove the manual transaxle.
•  Visually inspect the rear oil seal.
•  Are there any oil leakage detected?
Yes
Replace the rear oil seal.
No
Overhaul the engine and inspect followings:
•  Valve stem seals
•  Valve stem guide
•  Cylinder liners wear
•  Pistons
•  Piston rings (clearance in groove and end cap)
Repair or replace as necessary.
10
Verify test results.
•  If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms.
•  If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Information and perform the repair or diagnosis.
―  If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting is completed.
―  If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, reprogram the PCM if a later calibration is available. Retest.
