Outline
• Mazda M Hybrid uses the Integrated starter generator (ISG) with excellent power generation efficiency to generate electricity from the kinetic energy generated when the vehicle decelerates. The system uses the electrical power stored in the Mazda M Hybrid battery, which is a large-capacity battery to improve drivability and fuel economy by reducing engine load and providing motor assist. In addition, the Integrated starter generator (ISG) provides quiet engine restarting after the engine is stopped by after the i-stop function (idling stop).

1. Mazda M Hybrid activation
-
Purpose
-
• Verifies that the component parts of the Mazda M Hybrid are normal and activates.
-
Operation condition
-
• Ignition switched ON
-
Operation content
-
• Verifies the conditions of the Mazda M Hybrid battery, Integrated starter generator (ISG), and DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) and powers on the parts.
• Supplies electrical power to the vehicle's electrical devices (12 V power supply) from the battery.
2. Conventional power generation (no regenerative braking)
-
Purpose
-
• Generates electrical power using the Integrated starter generator (ISG), charges the Mazda M Hybrid battery, and supplies power to the vehicle’s electrical devices.
-
Operation condition
-
• The charge state of the Mazda M Hybrid battery is the specified value or less during engine rotation.
-
Operation content
-
• Operates the Integrated starter generator (ISG) to charge electrical power in the Mazda M Hybrid battery. The charged electrical power in the Mazda M Hybrid battery is supplied to the vehicle's electrical devices through the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid).
3. Regenerative braking
-
Purpose
-
• The kinetic energy that is generated when the vehicle decelerates is converted to electricity to charge the Mazda M Hybrid battery.
-
Operation condition
-
• The accelerator pedal is released and the vehicle speed is a certain speed or more.
-
Operation content
-
• Electrical power is generated by the Integrated starter generator (ISG) to charge the Mazda M Hybrid battery. The charged electrical power in the Mazda M Hybrid battery is supplied to the vehicle’s electrical devices through the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid).
4. Mazda M Hybrid battery power supply
-
Purpose
-
• The engine load used for power generation is suppressed and fuel economy is improved using the energy charged in the Mazda M Hybrid battery.
-
Operation condition
-
• The charge state of the Mazda M Hybrid battery is a certain value or more during engine rotation.
• i-stop control (during engine-stop control) while driving
• i-stop control (during engine-stop control) while vehicle is stopped
-
Operation content
-
• The charged electrical power in the Mazda M Hybrid battery is supplied to the vehicle’s electrical devices through the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid) (discharge from battery not performed).
5. Motor assist
-
Purpose
-
• The Integrated starter generator (ISG) is driven using the charged electrical power in the Mazda M Hybrid battery during deceleration. Fuel economy is improved by suppressing the load applied to the engine.
-
Operation condition
-
• The charge state of the Mazda M Hybrid battery is a certain value or more during engine rotation.
-
Operation content
-
• The Integrated starter generator (ISG) is driven using the charged electrical power in the Mazda M Hybrid battery to assist the engine. Also, electrical power is supplied to the vehicle’s electrical devices through the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid).
6. Engine restarting by ISG
-
Purpose
-
• The Integrated starter generator (ISG) is driven and the engine restarts quietly and quickly.
-
Operation condition
-
• Engine restart by i-stop control (engine stop control)
• Engine restart by i-stop control (engine stop control) while driving
-
Operation content
-
• The Integrated starter generator (ISG) is driven using the charged electrical power in the Mazda M Hybrid battery to restart the engine. Also, electrical power is supplied to the vehicle’s electrical devices through the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid).
7. Mazda M Hybrid shut off
-
Purpose
-
• While the ignition is switched OFF, the Mazda M Hybrid battery is interrupted to reduce self discharge.
-
Operation condition
-
• Ignition switched OFF
-
Operation content
-
• Disconnects the Mazda M Hybrid battery, Integrated starter generator (ISG), and the DC-DC converter (Mazda M Hybrid). Supplies electrical power to the vehicle's electrical devices (12 V power supply) from the battery.
• The following is an example of the Mazda M Hybrid operation.
Mazda M Hybrid condition verification
-
• The PCM sends a signal related to the regenerative braking condition to the connectivity master unit (CMU).
• The connectivity master unit (CMU) displays information related to the Mazda M Hybrid on the multi-information display or center display by receiving the signal from the PCM. (See
MULTI-INFORMATION DISPLAY.)
Mazda M Hybrid malfunction
-
• If a malfunction occurs in a part related to the Mazda M Hybrid, the PCM sends a charge warning light or master warning light illumination request to the instrument cluster and a message display request to the multi-information display or center display according to the malfunction condition. (See
MULTI-INFORMATION DISPLAY.)
