TRANSFER CASE REMOVAL [LA4AX-EL (CD4E)]

1. Shift the selector lever to the N position.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

3. Mark the propeller shaft relative to the companion flange.

4. Remove the propeller shaft. (See PROPELLER SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

5. Remove the joint shaft. (See JOINT SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [YF (2.0 L Zetec), AJ (3.0 L Duratec)].)

6. Remove the exhaust front pipe. (See FRONT PIPE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

7. Remove the exhaust manifold. (See EXHAUST MANIFOLD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) (See EXHAUST MANIFOLD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

8. Remove the three bolts.

9. Remove the heat shield.

10. Remove the six bolts and the bracket.

11. Remove the four bolts and crossmember brace.

12. Remove the bolt.

13. Disconnect the transfer case vent hose from the vent tube.

Note

• Plug the vent tube to prevent oil leak.

14. Remove the bolt and the transfer case.

Caution

• A new transfer case driven gear seal must be installed any time the transfer case is removed. (See TRANSFER CASE DRIVEN GEAR SEAL INSTALLATION [LA4AX-EL (CD4E)].)
