AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL [LA4AX-EL (CD4E)]

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Drain the engine coolant. (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

3. Remove the battery and battery tray. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L3, AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

4. Disconnect the crankcase vent hose and MAF sensor connector.

5. Remove the air hose and air cleaner cover.

6. Remove the air cleaner component.

7. Disconnect the TR switch connector.

8. Disconnect the HO2S sensor connectors.

9. Disconnect the HO2S sensor connectors.

10. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness connector and remove the wiring harness bracket nut.

11. Position the wiring harness bracket out of the way and remove the spacer.

12. Disconnect the wiring harness.

13. Disconnect the selector cable.

14. Remove the selector cable and bracket, then position if out of the way.

15. Disconnect the starter wiring harness connector.

16. Disconnect the ground wiring harness.

17. Remove the thermostat housing. (See THERMOSTAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) (See THERMOSTAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [AJ (3.0L Duratec)].)

18. Remove two starter installation bolts, and remove the starter.

19. Remove the power steering pressure hose bracket to install the SST (49 UN30 3050).

20. Remove the connectors from the valve cover.

21. Install the SSTs.

22. Remove the upper transaxle retaining bolts.

23. Remove the upper transaxle mount plate (LH).

24. Remove the bolts, and remove the rear transaxle mount.

25. Remove the engine mount bolt (RH).

26. Raise the engine 51-76 mm {2.0-3.0 in} using the SSTs.

27. Lift up the vehicle.

28. Remove both front wheels. (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

29. Remove the two splash shields.

30. If transaxle disassembly is necessary, remove the drain plug and drain the ATF into a suitable container.

31. Install the drain plug when the ATF has drained.

32. Remove the front drive shaft (RH) and joint shaft component. (See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.) (See JOINT SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [YF (2.0 L Zetec), AJ (3.0 L Duratec)].)

Caution

• Index-mark the mounting bracket studs and the joint shaft bearing bracket for correct reassembly.

33. Remove the front drive shaft (LH) component. (See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

34. Remove the cross brace.

35. Remove the exhaust pipe.

(1) Remove the rubber hanger.

(2) Remove the nuts and remove the pipe.

36. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe flange.

37. Disconnect the rear exhaust pipe flange and remove the exhaust pipe.

38. Remove the front propeller shaft bolts.

39. Remove the rear propeller shaft bolts and remove the propeller shaft.

40. Press the two tubs and remove the transfer vent tube.

41. Remove the bolts from the bracket.

42. Remove the two bolts and remove the bracket.

43. Remove the cross brace.

44. Lower the vehicle.

45. Lower the transaxle enough to clear the subframe.

Note

• It is necessary to lower the transaxle in order to clear the subframe to remove the transaxle.

46. Lift up the vehicle.

47. Remove the access cover.

48. Remove the four torque converter mounting nuts.

49. Remove the following parts.

(1) Disconnect the OSS sensor connector.

(2) Disconnect the TSS sensor connector.

(3) Remove the bolt.

(4) Remove the oil pipe and position it aside.

50. Remove the oil hose.

51. Install the transaxle jack and secure the transaxle to the jack.

52. Remove the bolts.

53. Remove the vent tube.

54. Remove the bolt and nut.

55. Remove the bolt.

Caution

• Lower the transaxle so that the torque converter does not fall down.

56. Lower the transaxle from the engine complete.
