Idle Speed Motor Position Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE/OPERATION
The idle speed control motor position sensor converts the position of the plunger in the idle speed control motor to a voltage and inputs it to the engine control module. The engine control module controls the idle speed control motor based on this signal.
5 Volts is supplied to the idle speed control motor position sensor by the engine control module, passes through a resistor in the sensor, and is grounded at the engine control module.
If the plunger in the idle speed control motor moves from the contracted to the extended position, the resistance between the variable resistor terminal of the and the ground terminal of the idle speed control motor position sensor increases in proportion to the amount of extension. Thus the voltage at the variable resistor terminal of the idle speed control motor position sensor increases as the plunger is extended.
