Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair

1. Remove oil fill plug and O-ring and drain compressor oil.
2. Remove clutch.
3. Remove shaft key from crankshaft.
4. Remove seal plate.
5. Using suitable compressor seal puller, pull out seal and discard. Do not use screwdriver to pry shaft seal from shaft.
6. Clean shaft and seal cavity with suitable cloth.
7. Dip seal in clean refrigerant oil.
8. Push seal assembly, except carbon ring, over end of shaft with carbon ring retainer facing out.
9. Move seal assembly into position on shaft.
10. Place carbon ring in ring retainer so lapped surface is facing outward. Indentations in outer edge of carbon ring must engage driving lugs and be firmly seated in retainer.
11. Install new O-ring in groove of seal plate and retain with refrigerant oil.
12. Install seal plate attaching screws and tighten evenly, torquing to 5.1-7.2 ft. lbs.
13. Install clutch.
14. Add oil to specifications and install filler plug with new O-ring.
