Service Procedure

PART I - REPLACEMENT OF JUMPER WIRE

1. Raise hood.

2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Remove right instrument panel hush panel.

4. Remove left instrument panel hush panel.

5. Remove tailgate interlock jumper wire. This jumper wire is shorter than the correct jumper wire and IS NOT routed as shown in Figure 1.

6. Install new jumper wire, to be obtained from zone office as necessary. See routing of jumper wire in Figure 1.
7. Reconnect negative battery cable.

8. Check operation of tailgate release. It should be activated in Park ONLY with ignition switch in Run position. See: Service Procedure (Part II) - Tailgate Release (Functional Check).

9. Install left instrument panel hush panel.

10. Install right instrument panel hush panel.

If tailgate release does not operate as outlined above, refer to 1984 Pontiac Service Manual, Volume 3, Section 8A, pages 167 and 329 for electrical diagnosis and trouble shooting and repair as necessary.
