Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

Park-Neutral Backup Lamp Switch:





1. Remove negative battery cable, console, mounting bolts, and switch assembly.
2. Replacement using old switch.
a. Place shift shaft in NEUTRAL.
b. Replace carrier tang (818) on switch (817) with tang slot (824) on shift control.
c. Install mounting bolts (819) to case, loosely.
d. Rotate switch (817) to align service adjustment hole with carrier tang hole.
e. Insert gauge pin (820) 2.34 mm (3/32 inch) into service adjustment hole, and rotate switch (817) until pin drops into a depth of 15.0 mm (19/32 inch) and tighten bolts (see SPECIFICATIONS/MECHANICAL for torque values).
3. Replacement using new switch.
a. Place shift shaft in NEUTRAL.
b. Replace carrier tang (818) on switch (817) with tang slot (824) on shift control.
c. Install mounting bolts (819) to case, loosely. If bolt holes do not align with shift control, verify that the shift lever is in NEUTRAL; DO NOT rotate the switch. The switch is pinned in the NEUTRAL position.
NOTE: If the switch has been rotated and the pin is broken, the switch can be adjusted using the old switch (see #2) procedure.
4. Install console and negative battery cable.
