Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement

PCM:

CAUTION: To prevent possible electrostatic discharge damage to the PCM, do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board. Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) programming. If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, PCM should be checked first to see if it is the correct part. If it is, remove the faulty PCM and install the new service PCM.

NOTE: THE SERVICE PCM EEPROM WILL NOT BE PROGRAMMED. DTC PO6O2 indicates the EEPROM is not programmed or has malfunctioned.

NOTE: When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM (controller), it is important to transfer the broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. Do not record on PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle.

CAUTION: To prevent internal PCM damage, the ignition must be "OFF" when disconnecting or reconnecting power to PCM (for example, battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.).

CAUTION: The ignition should always be "OFF" when installing or removing the PCM connectors.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. PCM from mounting hardware.
3. Harness connectors from PCM.
4. PCM from engine compartment.
5. If the PCM is being replaced, remove the Knock Sensor (KS) module for installation in the new PCM.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. If a new PCM is being installed, install the KS module from the original PCM.
2. Connectors to PCM.
3. PCM into vehicle.
4. Negative battery cable.
5. If a new PCM is being installed, program the EEPROM.
