Timing Chain: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove engine front cover.
3. Rotate crankshaft until timing marks on crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket locator hole are aligned to marks on engine block or timing chain damper. This is No. 1 position at top dead center.
4. Remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolt, Fig. 11 .
5. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
6. Remove crankshaft sprocket using tool No. J 5825-A, or equivalent.
7. Remove timing chain dampener attaching bolts and dampener.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install crankshaft sprocket using tool No. J 38612, or equivalent, until fully seated on flange of crankshaft nose.
b. Apply prelube part No. 1052367, or equivalent, to sprocket thrust surface.
c. Tighten to specifications.
