Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

1. Field lead attaching bolt/screw from solenoid terminal.
2. Note indexing of each starter motor through bolt and its location relative to the field lead for later reassembly.
3. Remove thru-bolts, identification tag, and Commutator End (CE) frame from motor.
4. Brake washer from armature shaft.
5. Frame and field for Drive End (DE) housing and armature.
6. Armature with starter drive from DE frame by tilting to disengage drive collar from lever.
7. Solenoid attaching screws and solenoid from DE housing.
8. Lever shaft retaining ring and lever shaft from DE housing. Plunger and lever with return spring from DE housing. (If the lever shaft is staked into place, drill and drive the shaft out. In this case, a new shaft and retaining ring will be needed for reassembly.

Important
- Check starter drive for slippage before removing from armature shaft. See "Cleaning Inspection and Tests" for drive.

9. Thrust collar from armature shaft, then snap pinion stop collar off of retainer ring. Collar will remain on shaft next to drive.
10. Retainer ring from groove in armature shaft. Ring is not re-used; bend ring enough to avoid scratching armature shaft surface as ring is removed.
