Ignition Switch: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Remove wiper/washer and turn signal switch covers.
4. Remove upper section of instrument panel.
5. Remove air ducts both in and above the steering column.
6. Cut off clip securing wiring harness and flexible ducts to the steering column.
7. Disconnect wiper/washer and turn signal electrical connectors. Disconnect horn switch and ignition switch leads.
8. Remove upper joint pinch bolt. Loosen remaining bolt and withdraw universal joint from steering column shaft splines.
9. Remove steering wheel adjustment as follows:
a. Using a hammer and drift, tap out tubular dowel.
b. Remove nut and washer.
c. Withdraw shaft from clamp.
d. Lift off upper section of the steering wheel adjustment assembly.
10. Remove three attaching screws, then lift off turn signal switch.
11. Remove rubber bushing from housing, then the upper section of the steering column.
12. Remove washer and steering column bearing.
13. Loosen attaching screws, then remove ignition switch.
14. Turn ignition switch key to position 1, press in locking tab and withdraw lock cylinder.
15. Reverse procedure to install.
