Air Bag (Inflator) Module and Seat Belt Pretensioner Disposal

WARNING:

If live air bag (inflator) modules or seat belt pretensioners are disposed of without being deployed/activated beforehand using the proper procedure, there is a risk of personal injury and health problems from contact with the harmful substances that may come out if the deployment container seal is broken.

Before disposing of any live air bag (inflator) modules or seat belt pretensioners, be sure to deploy/activate them using the specified procedure. Never dispose of any live ones through ordinary refuse disposal channels.

Air bag (inflator) module / seat belt pretensioner can be deployed / activated inside or outside of vehicle. Deployment / Activation method used depends upon final disposition of vehicle. Review the following instructions in order to determine which will work best in a given situation.

Deployment / Activation Outside of Vehicle: When you intend to return the vehicle to service, deploy the air bag (inflator) module(s) and/or activate seat belt pretensioner(s) outside of the vehicle.

Deployment / Activation Inside of Vehicle: When the vehicle will be destroyed, or salvaged for component parts, deploy the air bag module(s) and/or activate seat belt pretensioner(s) installed on vehicle.

WARNING:

Failure to take proper precautions when deploying an air bag (inflator) module and/or activating a seat belt pretensioner can result in severe personal injury.

Be sure to take all of the following precautions when deploying an air bag (inflator) module and/or activating a seat belt pretensioner:

- Strictly follow the procedure described in this section.
- Read Precautions on Service and Diagnosis of Air Bag System Precautions on Service and Diagnosis of Air Bag System:Advanced Air Bag
and follow all of the instructions provided.

- Only one person should perform his work to avoid accidental deployment/activation.
- Perform this work in a well-ventilated area as smoke is produced when the air bag (inflator) module / pretensioner is activated.
- Wear safety glasses throughout the disposal procedure from the very beginning. The air bag (inflator) module / seat belt pretensioner will immediately be activated when a 12-volt battery is connected.
- Wear suitable ear protection when activating an air bag (inflator) module / seat belt pretensioner. Also, advise persons in nearby areas to wear suitable ear protection.
- Do not activate two or more air bag (inflator) modules, seat belt pretensioners, or a combination of two at the same time.
- Never connect the deployment harness to any 12-volt battery before connecting it to the air bag (inflator) module or seat belt pretensioner. The deployment harness must remain shorted and not be connected to a 12-volt battery until preparation for activation of the air bag (inflator) module / seat belt pretensioner is completed.

Deployment / Activation Outside of Vehicle

When you intend to return the vehicle to service, deploy the air bag (inflator) module(s) or activate seat belt pretensioner(s) outside of the vehicle.
1) Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and remove key.
2) Wear safety glasses during this deployment / activation procedure.
3) Check that there is no open, short or damage in special tools (deployment harness (A) and adapter cable (B)). If any faulty is found, do not use it and be sure to use new special tool.
Special Tool

(A): 09932-75031

(B): 09932-76510

4) Short two deployment harness leads (1) together by fully seating one banana plug into the other.

WARNING:
If a 12-volt battery is connected to the deployment harness (A) before completing preparation for activation of an air bag module/seat belt pretensioner, there is a risk of accidental activation of the module/pretensioner.

Keep the deployment harness (A) shorted and do not connect it to a 12-volt battery until preparation for activation of the air bag module/seat belt pretensioner is completed.

5) Remove air bag (inflator) module(s) or seat belt pretensioner(s) from vehicle.
- Driver air bag (inflator) module: Removal and Installation
- Passenger air bag (inflator) module: Removal and Installation
- Front side-air bag (inflator) module: Removal and Installation
- Rear side-air bag (inflator) module: Removal and Installation
- Curtain air bag (inflator) module: Removal and Installation
- Seat belt pretensioner: Removal and Installation

WARNING:
Failure to take proper precautions when handling and storing a live (non-deployed) air bag (inflator) module can result in personal injury due to accidental deployment of the air bag.
- Handle or store a live air bag (inflator) module in a place with an ambient temperature below 65 °C (150 °F), without high humidity and away from electric noise sources.
- Always carry a live air bag (inflator) module with the trim cover pointing away from you.
- Always place a live air bag (inflator) module on a bench or other surface with the bag (trim cover) side facing up to keep it away from the surface.
- Do not place anything including another (inflator) module on top of an air bag (inflator) module. Allowing for a free space above the module is essential to minimize the risk of personal injury in the event of accidental deployment of the air bag.

WARNING:
Failure to take proper precautions when handling and storing a live (non-activated) seat belt pretensioner can result in personal injury due to accidental activation of the pretensioner.
- Handle and store a live seat belt pretensioner in a place with an ambient temperature below 65 °C (150 °F), without high humidity and away from electric noise sources.
- Never carry a live air bag pretensioner by holding the belt webbing.
- When placing a live seat belt pretensioner on a workbench or other flat surface, make sure that the pretensioner's exhaust hole (1) side faces upward.
- Do not put anything on the exhaust hole (1) side of a live seat belt pretensioner. Also avoid placing one live air bag pretensioner on top of another.
