STEERING GEAR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS FOR SRS EQUIPPED VEHICLES


THIS BULLETIN REPLACES
BULLETIN # 0488 REF SR-001-95R


This bulletin deals with procedures to follow before steering gear removal and after steering gear installation. The information is aimed at those vehicles that are equipped with the driver's side SRS airbag.

NOTE:
For actual information regarding steering gear R & R, please refer to appropriate repair manual.

SST (SPECIAL SERVICE TOOLS) OR EQUIVALENT

LUBRICANT


STEERING GEAR REMOVAL:

NOTE:
The following procedures should be performed before removing the steering gear from the vehicle.

CAUTION:
Work should not be started until after approx. 20 seconds or longer (depending on model / year) from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the battery negative terminal disconnected.

1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
2. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD


NOTE:
If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, diagnostic codes will be recorded.

- Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.







a) Remove steering wheel lower covers.
b) Using torx socket wrench, loosen torx screws until groove along screws until groove along screw circumference catches on screw case.







c) Pull out wheel pad from steering wheel and disconnect airbag connector.

CAUTION:
- When removing wheel pad, take care not to pull airbag wire harness.
- When storing wheel pad, keep upper surface of pad facing upward.
- Never disassemble wheel pad.

3. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL
a) Disconnect connector.
b) Remove wheel set nut.
c) Place matchmarks on steering wheel and main shaft.







d) Using SST 09950-50010 or equivalent tool, remove steering wheel.

STEERING GEAR INSTALLATION:

NOTE:
The following procedures should be performed after reinstalling the steering gear on the vehicle.

1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

Hint: Do it with the front of the vehicle jacked up.





2. CENTRE THE SPIRAL CABLE

a) Turn spiral cable by hand until it becomes hard to turn
b) Rotate cable clockwise about 2.5 or turns to align matchmarks

NOTE: The number of clockwise rotations of the cable required, may vary by model, so please refer to the appropriate repair manual.

3. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL
a) Align matchmarks on steering wheel and main shaft
b) Temporarily tighten steering wheel nut
c) Reconnect connector

4. BLEED POWERING STEERING SYSTEM
5. CHECK STEERING WHEEL CENTRE POINT
6. TORQUE STEERING WHEEL SET NUT

(Please refer to applicable repair manual for specified torque value).

7. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD

NOTE:
- Make sure pad is installed according to specified torque value.
- If pad has been dropped or there are cracks, dents or other defects in case or connector, then replace wheel pad.
- When installing pad, take care that there is no interference between wiring and other parts.

a) Connect airbag connector







b) Install pad after confirming that circumference groove of torx screws are caught on screw case
c) Using torx socket wrench, torque screws (refer to applicable repair manual for specified value)
d) Install steering wheel lower covers

8. CHECK FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT
(Refer to appropriate repair manual)
