Ignition Timing Advance

Special Tools
^ VAG 1367 Engine Tester and inductive pick-up VAG 1367/8.

Test Conditions
^ Ignition timing OK.
^ No malfunctions stored in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory.
^ Engine oil temperature at least 80°C (176°F) minimum.

Procedure

NOTE:
On some vehicles a Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor is installed as standard. Use adaptor cable VAG 1367/9 to connect the TDC sensor.





- Connect VAG 1367 Engine Tester using VAG 1367/8 inductive pickup.
- Start engine and let idle.
- Set Engine Tester to 2200 rpm.
- Slowly raise engine speed to slightly above 2200 rpm until ignition timing (advance angle) is displayed.

^ Specification: 23 to 33° BTDC

- If timing does not advance:

- Perform electrical checks.
- If necessary, replace Engine Control Module (ECM) J169.
