Turn Signals: Testing and Inspection


Checking Turn Signal and Emergency Flasher System, From September 1998


Required for troubleshooting :
- Multimeter Fluke 83
- Connector Test Kit VW1594
- Valid wiring diagram

Before starting troubleshooting, battery negative terminal (-) must be securely tighted.

Prerequisite:
- S16 Fuse 16 (15A), located on fuse/relay-panel, OK !
- All turn signal bulbs OK !


CAUTION!
DO NOT damage, enlarge or bend connector terminals or cavities by forcing probes into them when performing electrical checks. Always use connector test kit VW 1594 to make the necessary electrical connections.



Preparation:
- Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers
- Remove Emergency Flasher Switch (E3).
- Remove steering column switch cover.


NOTE: if the emergency flasher system is inoperative and the turn signals function normally, check the battery voltage supply (30 circuit) to the Emergency Flasher Switch.(E3). If the turn signal system is inoperative and the emergency flasher system functions normally, check the ignition "ON" voltage supply (15a circuit) to the Emergency Flasher Switch (E3).


After repairing malfunction, perform functional test of the turn signal and emergency flasher system.
