Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Component Function Modifications

Damper Motor For Air Distribution Control

Changes:
MCC and the standard heater previously had wires between the air distribution controls and floor/defroster dampers, and the ventilation dampers respectively.

Function:
The damper motor drives a camwheel with a cam profile on each side. A tap, connected to the floor/defroster dampers' and ventilation dampers' axles respectively, runs through each cam profile via their own linkages The tap positions are changed by the cam profiles as the damper motor drives the camwheel round, and the positions of the dampers are affected by means of the linkages following the pattern of the cam profiles.

Blower Motor

Fan function diagnostics are carried out before the normal function is started. This is done by feeding the fan with 6 volts for 1.5 seconds. During this time the fan's power consumption is measured. When the diagnostics are complete the fan reverts to the selected speed.

The 1.5 second current pulse also serves to overcome any resistance from snow or ice that may otherwise block the fan, at the same time the diagnostic system checks that the fan is not blocked.
