Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Timing Belt: Service and Repair

1. Remove timing belt cover. Lower cover retaining screw must be removed from below vehicle after removing right guard.
2. Check timing by aligning timing mark on back of camshaft sprocket with timing mark on shield. Timing mark on crankshaft pulley should coincide with timing mark on cover.
3. Apply hand brake and engage a low gear to prevent crankshaft from turning.
4. Loosen alternator adjusting nut and the alternator to bracket attaching bolt and remove drive belt.
5. Loosen tensioner retaining nut, move tensioner toward engine nut and tighten nut, then remove timing belt with slack on tensioner side.
6. Install new timing belt, ensuring timing belt teeth are perfectly coupled with sprockets.
7. Loosen nut holding tensioner to allow tensioner to tighten belt, then tighten tensioner nut in this position to specifications. Ensure timing marks are still correctly aligned.
8. Install drive belt, adjusting its tension to approximately 1/2 inch deflection with moderate finger pressure.
9. Install timing belt cover.
10. Check and adjust ignition timing as necessary.
