Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Gas Strut - Replacement

Group: 55

Number: 93-02

Date: March 31, 1993

Subject:
Gas Strut Replacement

Model(s):
All All m.y.

Before replacing gas struts for hoods or trunk lids, observe the following:

^ A light oil film on the piston rod or a the seal is normal and needed for lubrication. DO NOT remove this oil film.

^ The lift force of the gas strut depends on the outside (ambient) air temperature. When temperatures are low, a higher force is normally needed to operate the hood/trunk lid.

^ If one gas strut is faulty, it is not necessary to replace the struts in pairs. Always check struts individually and replace only the ones that are faulty.

^ Please inform customers if struts are not replaced after complaints. Functioning struts cannot be claimed under warranty.
