Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side

* J 42385-100 - Head/Main Bolt Thread Repair Kit

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning Battery Disconnect Warning.


1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).

2. Remove the air inlet grille panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Lower Panel) Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Lower Panel)Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Upper Panel) Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Upper Panel).

Warning: Refer to Gasoline/Gasoline Vapors Warning Service Precautions.


Warning: Refer to Safety Goggles and Fuel Warning Safety Goggles and Fuel Warning.


Warning: Refer to Relieving Fuel Pressure Warning Service Precautions.


3. Depressurize the fuel system. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Service and Repair.

4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining and Filling.

5. Remove the intake manifold assembly. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement Intake Manifold Replacement.

6. Remove the engine coolant air bleed pipe and cover. Refer to Engine Coolant Air Bleed Hose Replacement (V6) Engine Coolant Air Bleed Hose ReplacementEngine Coolant Air Bleed Hose Replacement (V8) Engine Coolant Air Bleed Hose Replacement.

7. Remove the right side ignition coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement Service and Repair.

8. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement Service and Repair.

9. Remove the oil level indicator and tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement.




10. Remove the vehicle body ground cable to cylinder head retaining nut (1).

11. Remove the vehicle body ground cable (3) from the cylinder head stud (2).




12. Remove the cylinder head stud (3) from the cylinder head (2) and move the wiring harness ground (1) away from the cylinder head (2).

13. Remove the right side exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side.

14. Remove the right side valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Right Side Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Right Side.

15. Remove the right side valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.

16. Remove the right side cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal - Right Side 21. Cylinder Head Removal - Right Side.

Installation Procedure

1. Transfer parts as necessary.

2. Install the right side cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation - Right Side (L76, L77) 82. Cylinder Head Installation - Right Side.




3. Position the wiring harness ground (1) on the cylinder head (2).

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

4. Install the cylinder head stud (3) to the cylinder head (2).

Tighten the stud to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).




5. Install the vehicle body ground cable (3) to the cylinder head stud (2).

6. Install the vehicle body ground cable to cylinder head retaining nut (1).

Tighten the nut to 12 Nm (106 lb ft).

7. Install the oil level indicator and tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement.

8. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement Service and Repair.

9. Install the right side ignition coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement Service and Repair.

10. Install the engine coolant air bleed pipe and cover. Refer to Engine Coolant Air Bleed Hose Replacement (V6) Engine Coolant Air Bleed Hose ReplacementEngine Coolant Air Bleed Hose Replacement (V8) Engine Coolant Air Bleed Hose Replacement.

11. Install the intake manifold assembly. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement Intake Manifold Replacement.

12. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining and Filling.

13. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).

14. Install the air inlet grille panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Lower Panel) Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Lower Panel)Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Upper Panel) Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement (Upper Panel).
