Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair

REPLACE

1. Raise and support vehicle then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Remove brake caliper and rotor as outlined under "Caliper, Replace" in the "Disc Brake" unit repair section.
3. Remove ABS speed sensor screw.
4. Carefully remove speed sensor head from knuckle. If sensor has seized due to corrosion use a hammer and a punch to tap edge of sensor ear, rocking sensor until free. Do not use pliers on sensor head.
5. Remove hub and bearing as outlined under "Hub & Bearing, Replace."
6. Remove ball joint stud to steering knuckle clamp nut and bolt.
7. Insert a prybar between lower control arm and steering knuckle to separate ball joint stud from steering knuckle. Pulling steering knuckle out away from vehicle after releasing from ball joint can separate inner tripod joint.
8. Remove strut assembly to steering knuckle attaching bolts.
9. Remove steering knuckle from the vehicle.
10. Reverse procedure, noting the following:
a. Strut bolts have a serrated shaft so do not turn bolts in steering knuckle. Turn nut on bolts do not turn bolts.
b. Coat speed sensor head with high temperature multi-purpose E.P grease before installing.
c. Tighten new stub shaft retaining nut with vehicle brakes applied to 120 ± 10 ft. lbs.
