Applies To:
1999 Odyssey - All
2000 Odyssey - From VIN 2HKRL1...YH500001 thru 2HKRL1...YH527317
- From VIN 2HKRL1...YH000001 thru 2HKRL1...YH004262 (Canadian)

Safety Recall: Odyssey Wire Harness

BACKGROUND
The wire harness coming out of the under-hood fuse/relay box may be damaged by contact with the A/C suction line, possibly resulting in a blown fuse. Depending on which fuse blows, there could be a loss of engine power, lights, windshield wipers, horn, or the anti-lock function of the brakes. Loss of any of these critical components could be hazardous.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this recall. An example of the customer letter is at the end of this service bulletin.

Some affected vehicles may still be in dealer inventory. By Federal law, these vehicles cannot be sold or leased until they are repaired.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Inspect the wire harness for damage. If necessary, repair or replace the wire harness. Install corrugated tubing over the wire harness and the A/C suction line.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Measure the clearance between the A/C suction line and the wire harness, the A/C pressure switch, and the engine oil dipstick. Check for a minimum clearance of 10 mm at all three locations. If there is less than 10 mm, carefully bend the A/C suction line.

2. Inspect the wire harness for damage from the A/C suction line.

^ If the insulation on any of the wires is worn through so the copper wiring is showing, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A.

^ If the insulation on any of the wires is damaged, but no copper wiring is showing, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B.

^ If no insulation is damaged, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE C.

REPAIR PROCEDURE A

1. Replace the main wire harness assembly.

2. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE C.

REPAIR PROCEDURE B

1. Wrap each damaged wire with electrical tape.

2. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE C.

REPAIR PROCEDURE C

1. Cut a piece of corrugated tubing 80 mm to 90 mm in length.

2. Install the tubing over the wire harness where it exits the under-hood fuse relay box. Push the tubing down so it rests against the main harness. Position the slit in the tubing away from the A/C suction line.

3. Make sure the edges of the slit in the corrugated tubing do not overlap. Wrap electrical tape around the existing tape on the main wire harness, then up the corrugated tubing.

4. Cut a piece of corrugated tubing 60 mm to 66 mm in length.

5. Install the tubing over the A/C suction line.

6. Position the slit in the tubing in line with the charge valve. Wrap the end of the tubing closest to the charge valve with electrical tape. Do not tape the tubing to the A/C suction line.

7. Center-punch a completion mark above the fourth character (R) of the engine compartment VIN.

Safety Recall: Odyssey Wire Harness

Dear Odyssey Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

What is the reason for this notice?
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in the placement of a wire harness in all 1999 and certain 2000 Odyssey vehicles.

A wire harness in the engine compartment may contact or rub against a metal pipe that is part of the air conditioner. Eventually, one of the wires may be damaged and short-circuit, possibly causing a blown fuse.

If a fuse blows, the outcome would depend on the specific wire that was damaged. This harness contains wires that supply power to the engine and all critical electrical vehicle components. Certain blown fuses could cause your vehicle to experience a sudden loss of engine power without prior warning. Other fuse failures could result in an unexpected loss of any or all of your vehicle's electrical components. A loss of operation is possible for any of the following.

^ Engine power

^ Head, tail, and turn signal lamps

^ Hazard lamps (four-way flashers)

^ Windshield wiper and horn

^ Brake system anti-lock function (the vehicle would have normal braking capability, but the brakes could lock up during an emergency stop or while braking on a slippery surface.)

A sudden loss of power or lighting, or a failure of the windshield wipers or anti-lock brake feature in bad weather-without prior warning-could be hazardous and may result in a vehicle crash.

What should you do?
Call any authorized Honda automobile dealer and make an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. The dealer will install a protective covering over the wire harness and the metal pipe to prevent this problem. If any wires are damaged, the dealer will make the necessary repairs, then install the protective covering. This recall service and any necessary repairs will be done free of charge. Although this process takes less than an hour, please plan to leave your vehicle for half a day to allow the dealership flexibility in scheduling.
