Exhaust Temperature Sensor: Testing and Inspection

WARNING SYSTEM INSPECTION
1. Turn ignition switch "ON." Verify that heat hazard warning lamp illuminates.
2. Start engine and verify that lamp goes out.

Warning System Check:





3. Disconnect sensor connector.
4. Jumper connector terminals (harness side) and verify that warning lamp is lit.
5. If not as specified, check lamp in dash, sensor, connections and wiring harness.

Heat Hazard Sensor Testing:





SENSOR INSPECTION
1. Remove sensor from vehicle.
2. Wrap sensor and a thermometer in aluminum foil and place in a container of oil.
3. Connect a test lamp and 12V power source to sensor connector terminals.
4. Gradually heat oil and verify that test lamp illuminates when temperature inside the foil reaches 221° - 239°F (105° - 115°C).

CAUTION: Do not heat oil above 302°F (150°C).

5. Replace sensor if it does not operate as specified.
