DTC P0116 (Flash Code 23) Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance (RZ4E-TC)

1. DTC P0116 description

The engine coolant temperature sensor is installed near the thermostat housing. The engine coolant temperature sensor is a variable resistor and measures the temperature of the engine coolant. If the ECM detects that the difference of the engine coolant temperature is less than the calculated range under the predetermined conditions, the DTC is set. This DTC only runs once per ignition cycle within the effective conditions.

2. Condition for setting DTC P0116

Condition for running the DTC

  • The battery voltage is 9 to 16 V.
  • The fuel injection quantity is more than or equal to the predetermined value.
  • The engine speed is 1,200 rpm or more.
  • The vehicle speed is 0 km/h {0 mph} or more.
  • DTCs P0117, P0118, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0500, P060B, and P1655 are not set.

Condition for setting the DTC

  • The ECM detects that the difference between the maximum and minimum engine coolant temperatures is 5°C {9°F} or less.

3. Action taken when DTC P0116 sets

  • Euro4: The ECM illuminates the MIL. Refer to Action taken when DTC sets - Type B (Euro4).
  • Except Euro4: The ECM illuminates the check engine warning light. Refer to Action taken when DTC sets - Type B (Except Euro4).

Refer to "51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(RZ4E-TC) DTC type definitions".

  • The ECM assumes a default engine coolant temperature value.
  • The ECM limits the fuel injection quantity.
  • The ECM inhibits pre-injection.
  • The ECM inhibits the EGR control.
  • The ECM inhibits the cruise control.

4. Condition for clearing DTC P0116

  • Euro4: Refer to Condition for clearing the MIL/DTC - Type A or Type B (Euro4).
  • Except Euro4: Refer to Condition for clearing the check engine warning light/DTC - Type A or Type B (Except Euro4).
