1) Connect the scan tool.
2) Turn ON the ignition switch.
3) Operate the gearshift lever (MT models) or selector lever (AT models) to the N position.
4) Observe the Neutral Switch (M02-4) parameter on the scan tool. Does the Neutral Switch (M02-4) parameter change when the lever is operated?
Yes
The system is normal.
No (Normally OFF)
No (Normally ON)
=>Go to Inspection for short circuit in neutral switch.
1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.
2) Inspect the BACK UP 7.5A fuse. Is the result normal?
Yes
=>Go to Inspection for open circuit in neutral switch.
No
Replace the fuse. If the fuse blows out again, repair the short to ground in the circuits relating to the fuse.
1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.
2) Disconnect the neutral switch harness connector (E36) or inhibitor switch harness connector (E41).
3) Connect a fused jumper wire between the power supply circuit and the signal circuit of the neutral switch harness connector (pins 1 and 2 of E36). (MT models)
4) Connect a fused jumper wire between the power supply circuit and the N position signal circuit of the inhibitor switch harness connector (pins 2 and 9 of E41). (AT models)

=>Go to Inhibitor switch harness connector inspection.
No
=>Go to Inspection for open circuit in neutral switch power supply circuit.
1) Disconnect the fused jumper wire.
2) Connect a test lamp between the power supply circuit (pin 1 of E36 for MT models, pin 2 of E41 for AT models) and the body ground. Does the test lamp illuminate?

Repair the open circuit or high resistance in the power supply circuit between the BACK UP 7.5A fuse and the neutral switch (pin 1 of E36) or between the BACK UP 7.5A fuse and the inhibitor switch (pin 2 of E41).
1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.
2) Disconnect the BCM harness connector (C17).
3) Inspect the signal circuit between the BCM (pin 4 of C17) and the neutral switch (pin 2 of E36) or between the BCM (pin 4 of C17) and the inhibitor switch (pin 9 of E41) for an open circuit or high resistance. Is the result normal?
