PTC heater component internal failure

Detection condition
•  Any of the following conditions are met:
―  PCM detects LIN communication error between PTC heater controller and PCM
―  PCM receives condition signal from PTC heater controller that value detected by temperature sensor in PTC heater is outside of specification
Fail-safe
•  Refer to "DTC Table" and "Fail-safe Function Malfunction Contents Table". (See DTC TABLE [PCM (e-SKYACTIV)].)
Possible cause
•  PTC heater controller connector or terminals malfunction
•  Electric compressor controller connector or terminals malfunction
•  Electric water pump connector or terminals malfunction
•  PCM connector or terminals malfunction
•  Short to power supply in PTC heater controller LIN communication line
•  Short to ground in PTC heater controller LIN communication line
•  Short to ground in electric compressor controller LIN communication line
•  Short to ground in electric water pump LIN communication line
•  Open circuit in PTC heater LIN communication line
•  PTC heater malfunction
•  Electric compressor malfunction
•  Electric water pump malfunction
•  PCM malfunction
•  Poor insulation in the following high voltage cable
―  Junction box No.3—Electric compressor

•  Before inspecting or removing/installing the high voltage parts, refer to [HIGH VOLTAGE SERVICE CAUTIONS] in the general information and [High Voltage Part Inspection and Removal/Installation Notes] of the high voltage system service cautions and implement the necessary measures and preparations. •  Inspect the applicable connector and terminal.
•  Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION
•  Inspect the applicable connector and terminal.
•  Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

INSPECT ELECTRIC COMPRESSOR CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION
•  Inspect the applicable connector and terminal.
•  Are the connector and terminal normal?

INSPECT ELECTRIC WATER PUMP CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION
•  Inspect the applicable connector and terminal.
•  Are the connector and terminal normal?

VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED BY POOR INSULATION OF HIGH VOLTAGE CABLES
Warning
<<High voltage>>
•  Wear insulated gloves when working on a high voltage system.
•  Remove the service plug.
•  After 10 min have elapsed after removing the service plug, perform a zero voltage verification at the voltage detection point of the junction box to verify that there is no electrical charge in the high voltage circuit.
•  Inspect the insulation condition of the following high voltage cable.
―  Junction box No.3—Electric compressor
•  Is the insulation condition of the high voltage cable normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the high voltage cable, then go to the repair completion verification 1.

INSPECT PTC HEATER CONTROLLER LIN COMMUNICATION LINE FOR SHORT TO POWER SUPPLY
•  Inspect the applicable circuit for a short to power supply.
•  Is the circuit normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

INSPECT PTC HEATER CONTROLLER LIN COMMUNICATION LINE FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
•  Inspect the applicable circuit for open circuit.
•  Is the circuit normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.

INSPECT LIN COMMUNICATION LINES OF PTC HEATER CONTROLLER, ELECTRIC COMPRESSOR CONTROLLER, ELECTRIC WATER PUMP FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the connectors of the PCM, PTC heater controller, electric compressor controller, and the electric water pump.
•  Inspect for continuity between the electric water pump terminal B (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT LIN COMMUNICATION LINE IN PTC HEATER CONTROLLER FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Connect the PCM connector.
•  Verify that the PTC heater controller connector, electric compressor controller connector and electric water pump connector is disconnected.
•  Measure the voltage at electric water pump connector terminal B on the vehicle side and verify that the voltage is other than 0 V.
•  Connect the PTC heater controller connector.
•  Measure the voltage at electric water pump connector terminal B on the vehicle side.
•  Does the voltage change to 0 V?
Yes
A short circuit in the LIN communication line in the PTC heater controller can be considered.
•  Replace the PTC heater, then go to repair completion verification 1.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT LIN COMMUNICATION LINE IN ELECTRIC COMPRESSOR CONTROLLER FOR SHORT CIRCUIT
•  Connect the PCM connector.
•  Verify that the PTC heater controller connector, electric compressor controller connector and electric water pump connector is disconnected.
•  Measure the voltage at electric water pump connector terminal B on the vehicle side and verify that the voltage is other than 0 V.
•  Connect the electric compressor controller connector.
•  Measure the voltage at electric water pump connector terminal B on the vehicle side.
•  Does the voltage change to 0 V?
Yes
A short circuit in the LIN communication line in the electric compressor controller can be considered.
•  Replace the electric compressor, then go to repair completion verification 1.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT LIN COMMUNICATION LINE IN ELECTRIC WATER PUMP FOR SHORT CIRCUIT
•  Connect the PCM connector.
•  Verify that the PTC heater controller connector, electric compressor controller connector and electric water pump connector is disconnected.
•  Measure the voltage at electric compressor controller terminal C on the vehicle side and verify that the voltage is other than 0 V.
•  Connect the electric water pump connector.
•  Measure the voltage at electric compressor controller connector terminal C on the vehicle side.
•  Does the voltage change to 0 V?
Yes
A short circuit in the LIN communication line in the electric water pump can be considered.
•  Replace the electric water pump, then go to repair completion verification 1.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY WHETHER MALFUNCTION IS PRESENT OR PAST
•  Switch the main power OFF and wait for 30 s or more.
•  Switch the main power ON (READY on) and wait for 60 s or more.
•  Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM.
•  Is DTC B153C:00 a present malfunction?
Yes
•  Replace the PTC heater, then go to repair completion verification 1.
No
Go to repair completion verification 2.
Repair completion verification 1
VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED
Warning
<<High voltage>>
•  Wear insulated gloves when working on a high voltage system.
•  Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
•  Clear the DTC recorded in the memory.
•  Replicate the vehicle conditions at the time the DTC was detected using the following procedure.
Warning
•  While performing this step, always operate the vehicle in a safe and lawful manner.
•  When the M-MDS is used to observe monitor system status while driving, be sure to have another technician with you, or record the data in the M-MDS using the PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD capturing function and inspect later.
―  Drive the vehicle under the snapshot data condition.
•  Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM.
•  Is the same Pending DTC present?
Yes
Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error.
If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1.
•  If the malfunction recurs, replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

•  Perform the DTC inspection.
•  Are any other DTCs displayed?
Yes
Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
No
DTC troubleshooting completed.
