BRAKE system warning light stays on more than 4 seconds with ignition switch on. (Parking brake is released.)

Possible cause

•  Brake fluid amount is low. •  Instrument cluster or ABS HU/CM malfunction •  Short to GND in circuit in parking brake switch •  Parking brake switch or brake fluid level sensor stuck on. •  Short to GND in wiring between parking brake switch and BCM. •  Short to GND in wiring between brake fluid level sensor and BCM. •  Improper brake switch signal input to PCM (PCM stores DTC P0571:00 and/or P0703:00.) (MZR 1.3, MZR 1.5 without malfunction warning light)

Diagnostic procedure

STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	INSPECT BRAKE FLUID LEVEL •  Is brake fluid level normal?	Yes	MZR 1.3, MZR 1.5 with malfunction warning light Go to step 3. MZR 1.3, MZR 1.5 without malfunction warning light Go to the next step. MZ-CD 1.6 Go to step 3.
		No	Add brake fluid.
2	INSPECT PCM DTC •  Retrieve the PCM DTC using the M-MDS. (See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TEST [MZR 1.3, MZR 1.5].) •  Is the DTC P0571:00 and/or P0703:00 present?	Yes	Go to the applicable DTC inspection. (See DTC P0571:00 [MZR 1.3, MZR 1.5].) (See DTC P0703:00 [MZR 1.3, MZR 1.5].)
		No	Go to the next step.
3	INSPECT DTCS IN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER •  Retrieve instrument cluster DTC using the M-MDS. •  Is DTC U0415:92 displayed?	Yes	Retrieve the DTC for ABS and repair or replace malfunctioning part necessary.
		No	Go to the next step.
4	INSPECT WHETHER MALFUNCTION IS IN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OR ELSEWHERE •  Release the parking brake. •  Turn off all warning light and indicator light using M-MDS simulation function WL+IL? (See ACTIVE COMMAND MODES TABLE [INSTRUMENT CLUSTER].) •  Does the ABS warning light turn off?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Replace the instrument cluster. (See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
5	INSPECT WHETHER MALFUNCTION IS IN BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT RELATED SWITCHES OR ELSE WHERE •  Inspect following parts for continuity. ―  Parking brake switch (See PARKING BRAKE SWITCH INSPECTION.) ―  Brake fluid level sensor (See BRAKE FLUID LEVEL SENSOR INSPECTION.) •  Is the continuity condition normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
		No	Repair or replace malfunctioning part. (See PARKING BRAKE LEVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D.].) (See PARKING BRAKE LEVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [R.H.D.].) (See MASTER CYLINDER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D.].) (See MASTER CYLINDER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [R.H.D.].)
6*	INSPECT FOR SHORT TO GND CIRCUIT IN WIRING BETWEEN BCM AND BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT RELATED SWITCHES •  Inspect for open circuit in wiring for following: ―  Between parking switch and BCM terminal 7B ―  Between brake fluid level sensor and BCM terminal 4A •  Is the short to GND circuit detected?	Yes	Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
		No	Replace the BCM. (See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
