3	WILL NOT CRANK
DESCRIPTION	The starter does not work.
POSSIBLE CAUSE	• Open starter circuit between ignition switch and starter • TR switch malfunction (ATX) • TR switch misadjustment (ATX) • Low or dead battery • Charging system malfunction • Starter malfunction • TR switch malfunction (ATX) • TR switch misadjustment (ATX) • Starter relay malfunction • Seized/hydrolocked engine, flywheel or drive plate • Immobilizer system and/or circuit malfunction (if equipped) • Immobilizer system operating properly (Ignition key is not registered)


STEP	INSPECTION	RESULTS	ACTION
1	Note • The following test should be performed for vehicles with the immobilizer system. Go to Step 7 for vehicles without the immobilizer system. Connect the WDS or equivalent to the DLC-2. Do the following conditions appear? • The engine is not completely started. • DTC P1260 is displayed.	Yes	Both conditions appear: Go to Step 4.
1		No	Either or other condition appears: Go to the next step.
2	Is the coil connector securely connected to the coil?	Yes	Go to the next step.
2	Is the coil connector securely connected to the coil?	No	Connect the coil connector securely. Return to Step 1.
3	Does the security light illuminate?	Yes	Go to the next step.
3	Does the security light illuminate?	No	Inspect the instrument cluster and wiring harness.
4	Connect the WDS or equivalent to the DLC-2 and retrieve DTCs. DTC B1213, B1600, B1601, B1602, B1681, B2103	Yes	Go to the appropriate DTC inspection. (See DTC TABLE [YF (2.0L Zetec)].)
4		No	Go to the next step.
5	Inspect the following wiring harnesses and connectors: • Between coil terminal 3 and PCM terminal 19 • Between coil terminal 4 and PCM terminal 53 Is there any malfunction?	Yes	Repair or replace the wiring harness and connector.
5		No	Go to the next step.
6	Is there continuity between PCM terminal 27 and starter relay with P or N position (ATX)?	Yes	Go to the next step.
6		No	Repair or replace wiring harness.
7	Inspect the following: • Battery connection • Battery condition • Fuses • Transaxle in P or N position (ATX) Are all items normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
7		No	Service if necessary. Repeat Step 7.
8	Is a clicking sound heard from starter when the ignition switch is turned to START?	Yes	Go to the next step.
8		No	Go to Step 11.
9	Inspect the starting system. (See STARTER INSPECTION [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) Is starting system normal?	Yes	Inspect for seized/hydrolocked engine, drive plate (ATX) or flywheel (MTX). (See FLYWHEEL INSPECTION.)
9		No	Repair or replace components as required.
10	Inspect the starter relay. (See RELAY INSPECTION.) Is the starter relay okay?	Yes	Go to the next step.
10		No	Replace the starter relay.
11	Do any other electrical accessories function?	Yes	Go to the next step.
11	Do any other electrical accessories function?	No	Inspect charging system. (See BATTERY INSPECTION [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) (See GENERATOR INSPECTION [YF (2.0L Zetec)].)
12	Connect the WDS or equivalent to DLC-2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Access the TR PID. Does the TR PID indicate P/N when selecting P or N position?	Yes	Go to the next step.
12		No	Inspect TR switch is adjusted properly, inspect for open or short between TR switch and starter relay.
13	Connect the WDS or equivalent to the DLC-2. Retrieve any continuous memory DTCs. Are there any continuous memory DTCs displayed?	Yes	DTC is displayed: Go to the appropriate DTC inspection. (See DTC TABLE [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) Communication error message is displayed: Inspect for following: • Open circuit in wiring harness between main relay terminal 87 and PCM terminal 71, 97 • Open circuit in wiring harness between main relay terminal 86 and GND • Main relay is stuck open. • Open or poor GND circuit (PCM terminal 24, 51, 76, 77, or 103) • Poor connection of vehicle body GND
13		No	No DTC is displayed: Inspect following: • START circuit in ignition switch • Open circuit in wiring harness between ignition switch and starter
14	Retrieve any KOEO DTCs using the WDS or equivalent. Are any DTCs displayed during KOEO inspection?	Yes	DTC is displayed: Go to the appropriate DTC inspection. (See DTC TABLE [YF (2.0L Zetec)].)
14		No	No DTC is displayed: Inspect the following: • START circuit in ignition switch • Open circuit in wiring harness between ignition switch and starter
15	Verify test results. • If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms. (See ENGINE SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING [YF (2.0L Zetec)].) • If any malfunction remains, inspect related service information and, repair or diagnosis accordingly. - If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting completed. - If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, replace the PCM.
