Inspection/Verification

1. Operate the parking brake system and verify the malfunction indicated by the customer.

2. Inspect and determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply.

• Mechanical:
- Parking brake lever
- Parking brake cable
• Electrical:
- Parking brake warning circuit (See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART [INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (EXCEPT L3)].) (See DTC INSPECTION [INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (L3)].)

Inspect the brake shoes for excessive wear.
Are the brake shoes normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the brake shoes.

Inspect the parking brake cables for damage and corrosion.
Are the parking brake cables normal?
Yes
Inspect for other causes such as the parking brake lever installation or conventional brake system components.
No
Repair or replace the parking brake cables if necessary.

Raise and support the vehicle on a lift with the parking brake applied.
Does the parking brake release normally?
Yes
Inspect for other causes such as the conventional brake system components.
No
Go to the next step.

Inspect the front parking brake cable.
Disconnect the front parking brake cable from the rear parking brake cable.
Rotate the rear wheel.
Does the rear wheel rotate freely?
Yes
Replace the front parking brake cable.
No
Go to the next step.

Inspect the rear parking brake cable.
Disconnect the rear parking brake cable from the rear brake drum.
Rotate the rear wheel.
Does the real wheel rotate freely?
Yes
Replace the rear parking brake cable.
No
Go to the brake system inspection/verification.
