1) Connect the scan tool.
2) Turn ON the ignition switch.
3) Operate the gearshift lever (MT models) or selector lever (AT models) to the R position.
4) Observe the Back Lamp Switch (M02-3) parameter on the scan tool. Does the Back Lamp Switch (M02-3) parameter change when the shift lever is operated?
Yes
The system is normal.
No (Normally OFF)
No (Normally ON)
=>Go to Inspection for short circuit in back up light switch.
1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.
2) Inspect the BACK UP 7.5A fuse. Is the result normal?
Yes
=>Go to Inspection for open circuit in back up light switch.
No
Replace the fuse. If the fuse blows out again, repair the short to ground in the circuits relating to the fuse.
1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.
2) Disconnect the back up light switch harness connector (E35) or inhibitor switch harness connector (E41).
3) Connect a fused jumper wire between the signal circuit and the power supply circuit of the back up light switch harness connector (pins 1 and 2 of E35). (MT models)
4) Connect a fused jumper wire between the R position signal circuit and the power supply circuit of the inhibitor switch harness connector (pins 1 and 2 of E41). (AT models)

=>Go to Inhibitor switch harness connector inspection.
No
=>Go to Inspection for open circuit in back up light switch power supply circuit.
1) Disconnect the fused jumper wire.
2) Connect a test lamp between the power supply circuit (pin 1 of E35 for MT models [4JJ3 engine models] or pin 2 of E35 [RZ4E engine models], pin 2 of E41 for AT models) and the body ground. Does the test lamp illuminate?

Repair the open circuit or high resistance in the power supply circuit between the BACK UP 7.5A fuse and the back up light switch (pin 1 of E35 [4JJ3 engine models] or pin 2 of E35 [RZ4E engine models]), or between the BACK UP 7.5A fuse and the inhibitor switch (pin 2 of E41).
1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.
2) Disconnect the BCM harness connector (C17).
3) Inspect the signal circuit between the BCM (pin 3 of C17) and the back up light switch (pin 2 of E35 [4JJ3 engine models] or pin 1 of E35 [RZ4E engine models]) or between the BCM (pin 3 of C17) and the inhibitor switch (pin 1 of E41) for an open circuit or high resistance. Is the result normal?
