DTC P0089

Fuel pressure regulator performance problem

DETECTION CONDITION
•  The PCM compares the thermal pressure while the engine is running with the target thermal pressure and adjusts the thermal pressure. If the adjusted pressure value is more than the upper limit based on the engine speed, or less than the lower limit, the PCM determines that there is a malfunction in the fuel pressure regulator.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Improper fuel line air bleed
•  Leakage or clogging in fuel line
•  Restriction or damage in fuel filter
•  Fuel injector fuel relief valve stuck open or close
•  Fuel pressure sensor (built-in common rail) malfunction
•  Supply pump malfunction
•  Fuel metering valve (built-in supply pump) stuck open or close
•  PCM malfunction

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
•   Has the FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.
2
VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
•  Verify related service repair information availability.
•  Is any related repair information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
•   If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.
3
VERIFY RELATED PENDING CODE AND/OR DTC
•  Switch the ignition to off, then to ON (engine off).
•  Perform the Pending Trouble Code Access Procedure and DTC Reading Procedure.
•  Is the following PENDING CODE/DTC also present?
―  P0191, P0192, P0193, P0251, P0252, P0253, P0254
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
Go to the next step.
4
PERFORM FUEL LINE AIR BLEEDING
•  Perform the Fuel Line Air Bleeding.
•  Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
•  Is the same DTC present?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 11.
(Air in fuel line)
5
INSPECT WHETHERE MALFUNCTION IS IN LOW-PRESSURE SIDE FUEL LINE OR HIGH-PRESSURE SIDE
•  Measure the voltage between fuel pressure sensor terminal C and body ground.
•  Is the voltage above specified?
Yes
Go to Step 8.
No
Go to the next step.
6
INSPECT LOW-PRESSURE SIDE FUEL LINE FOR LEAKAGE AND CLOGGING
•  Switch the ignition to off.
•  Inspect for fuel leakage or clogging in the following fuel lines:
―  Fuel tank and fuel filter
―  Fuel filter and supply pump
―  Fuel return line manifold and supply pump
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace suspect fuel line, then go to Step 11.
No
Go to the next step.
7
INSPECT FUEL INJECTOR RELIEF VALVE FOR STUCK OPEN
•  Remove the fuel injector.
•  Inspect the fuel injector relief valve condition.
•  Is the fuel injector relief valve stuck open?
Yes
Replace the suspect fuel injector, then go to Step 11.
No
Go to the next step.
8
INSPECT HIGH-PRESSURE SIDE FUEL LINE FOR LEAKAGE AND CLOGGING
•  Switch the ignition to off.
•  Inspect for fuel leakage or clogging in the following fuel lines:
―  Common rail and fuel injector
―  Fuel injector and fuel return line manifold
―  Fuel return line manifold and fuel tank
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace suspect fuel line, then go to Step 11.
No
Go to the next step.
9
INSPECT WHETHER MALFUNCTION IS IN FUEL INJECTOR OR ELSEWHERE
•  Replace the fuel injector with one from another normal vehicle.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
•  Is the same DTC present?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the fuel injector, then go to Step 11.
10
INSPECT WHETHER MALFUNCTION IS IN FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR OR ELSEWHERE
•  Replace the common rail with one from another normal vehicle.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
•  Is the same DTC present?
Yes
Replace the supply pump, then go to the next step.
No
Replace the common rail, then go to the next step.
(Fuel pressure sensor malfunction)
11
VERIFY THAT DTC P0089 TROUBLESHOOTING IS COMPLETED
•  Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
•  Is the same DTC present?
Yes
Repeat the inspection from Step 1.
•  If the malfunction recurs, replace the PCM.
Go to the next step.
