Caution
•  Perform the following on-board diagnosis according to the determination using the flowchart. (See DETERMINATION USING FLOWCHART [MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM].)

Detection Condition

•  Possible causes of communication errors between the M-MDS and vehicle include communication circuit interruption due to an open circuit in the CAN communication wiring harness, or poor contact of connector terminals, or a BUS OFF condition due to a short circuit in the CAN communication wiring harness.

Possible Causes

•  Open or short circuit in the CAN communication wiring harness
•  Improper insertion of connector/damage, deformation, corrosion, or disconnection of connector terminals
•  PCM malfunction
•  ABS HU/CM malfunction (with ABS)
•  DSC HU/CM malfunction (with DSC)
•  Keyless control module malfunction (with advanced keyless and start system)
•  BCM malfunction
•  SAS control module malfunction
•  EPS control module malfunction
•  Theft-deterrent control module malfunction (with theft-deterrent system)
•  Instrument cluster malfunction
Caution
•  If an open circuit is detected, press the connector in the connection direction to verify that there is no looseness or disconnection before disconnecting the related connector for inspection.
•  When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no damage, deformation, or corrosion of the connector terminals.
•  When inspecting the DLC-2, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester into the terminals.

•  Is there communication between the M-MDS and vehicle?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go back to DETERMINATION USING FLOWCHART. (See DETERMINATION USING FLOWCHART [MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM].)

VERIFY THAT M-MDS AND DLC-2 ARE CONNECTED
•  Verify the connection condition between the M-MDS and DLC-2.
•  Are the connector terminals normal without damage, deformation, corrosion, or disconnection?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Correct the connection condition, then go to Step 12.

VERIFY PCM POWER SUPPLY CONDITION
•  Refer to the PCM terminal voltage table and inspect the terminal voltage and fuse condition.
•  Is the power supply condition normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the connector, then go to Step 12.

VERIFY PCM BODY GROUND CONDITION
•  Inspect the PCM body ground wiring harness and ground point.
•  Are the ground and ground point normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or replace the connector, then go to Step 12.

INSPECT BCM AND PCM CONNECTOR TERMINALS
•  Disconnect the negative battery cable.
•  Disconnect the BCM and PCM connectors.
•  Are the BCM and PCM connector terminals normal without damage, deformation, corrosion, or disconnection?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair the connector terminals if necessary, then go to Step 12.

VERIFY THAT THERE IS NO OPEN CIRCUIT IN CAN COMMUNICATION WIRING HARNESS
Caution
•  When inspecting the DLC-2, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester into the terminals.
•  Disconnect the negative battery cable.
•  Verify the continuity between the following terminals:
―  Between DLC-2 terminal F and BCM terminal 6X (L.H.D.)
―  Between DLC-2 terminal E and BCM terminal 6V (L.H.D.)
―  Between DLC-2 terminal F and BCM terminal 7X (R.H.D.)
―  Between DLC-2 terminal E and BCM terminal 7V (R.H.D.)
―  Between PCM terminal 1AE and BCM terminal 7X (L.H.D. (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
―  Between PCM terminal 1AI and BCM terminal 7V (L.H.D. (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
―  Between PCM terminal 1AE and BCM terminal 4U (R.H.D. (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
―  Between PCM terminal 1AI and BCM terminal 4W (R.H.D. (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
―  Between PCM terminal 301 and BCM terminal 7X (L.H.D. (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
―  Between PCM terminal 309 and BCM terminal 7V (L.H.D. (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
―  Between PCM terminal 301 and BCM terminal 4U (R.H.D. (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
―  Between PCM terminal 309 and BCM terminal 4W (R.H.D. (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)))
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
There is an open circuit in the CAN communication wiring harness. Repair or replace it, then go to Step 12.
7
INSPECT CAN COMMUNICATION WIRING HARNESS IN BCM FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
•  Verify the continuity between the following terminals:
―  Between BCM terminal 7X and BCM terminal 6X (L.H.D.)
―  Between BCM terminal 7V and BCM terminal 6V (L.H.D.)
―  Between BCM terminal 4U and BCM terminal 7X (R.H.D.)
―  Between BCM terminal 4W and BCM terminal 7V (R.H.D.)
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the BCM due to an open circuit in CAN communication wiring harness in the BCM, then go to Step 12.
8
VERIFY THAT THERE IS NO SHORT CIRCUIT IN CAN COMMUNICATION WIRING HARNESS
Caution
•  When inspecting the DLC-2, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester into the terminals.
•  Disconnect the negative battery cable.
•  Measure the resistance between the terminals.
―  Between DLC-2 terminal F and DLC-2 terminal E
―  Between BCM terminal 7X and BCM terminal 7V (L.H.D.)
―  Between BCM terminal 4U and BCM terminal 4W (R.H.D.)
•  Is the resistance 60 ohms or less?
Yes
There is an open circuit in the CAN communication wiring harness. Repair or replace it, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY THAT THERE IS NO SHORT CIRCUIT TO GROUND IN CAN COMMUNICATION WIRING HARNESS
Caution
•  When inspecting the DLC-2, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester into the terminals.
•  Verify the continuity between the following terminals:
―  Between DLC-2 terminal F and ground
―  Between DLC-2 terminal E and ground
―  Between PCM terminal 1AE and ground (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
―  Between PCM terminal 1AI and ground (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
―  Between PCM terminal 301 and ground (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
―  Between PCM terminal 309 and ground (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
There is a short circuit to ground in the CAN communication wiring harness. Repair or replace it, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY THAT THERE IS NO SHORT CIRCUIT TO POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM IN CAN COMMUNICATION WIRING HARNESS
Caution
•  When inspecting the DLC-2, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester into the terminals.
•  Disconnect the negative battery cable.
•  Verify the continuity between the following terminals:
―  Between DLC-2 terminal F and DLC-2 terminal A
―  Between DLC-2 terminal E and DLC-2 terminal A
―  Between PCM terminal 1AE and PCM terminal 1BC (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
―  Between PCM terminal 1AI and PCM terminal 1BC (except MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
―  Between PCM terminal 301 and PCM terminal 311 (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
―  Between PCM terminal 309 and PCM terminal 311 (MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6))
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
There is a short circuit to the power supply system in the CAN communication wiring harness. Repair or replace it, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT CAN-RELATED MODULES OTHER THAN PCM AND BCM
•  Remove only one of the CAN-related modules other than those related to the PCM and BCM.
•  Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
•  Does the M-MDS recognize the vehicle?
Yes
Replace the removed module.
No
Inspect all of the CAN-related modules other than those related to the PCM and BCM using the same procedure.
After inspecting all of the modules, go to the next step.

PERFORM VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION
•  Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
•  Does the M-MDS recognize the vehicle?
Yes
DTC troubleshooting completed.
No
Replace the PCM.
Go to the next step.

PERFORM VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION
•  Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
•  Does the M-MDS recognize the vehicle?
Yes
DTC troubleshooting completed.
No
Replace the BCM.
