Body CAN communication circuit inspection (Central GateWay)

Note

  • The installed devices vary depending on the vehicle. All the devices that may be connected to the CAN communication circuit are shown in the diagnostic procedure. Perform diagnosis only for the applicable device procedure.

1. Body control system check

Refer to "64.Body Control 10I.Troubleshooting(Central GateWay) diagnostic system check - central gateway controls".

2. Scan tool communication verification

Caution

  • If the IDSS is in use, check for a malfunction in the IDSS interface equipment. If the IDSS interface equipment LED does not illuminate, refer to Scan tool does not power up, and inspect the power supply.

1) Connect the scan tool.

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Check the vehicle specifications and verify the status of communication with the following control modules using a scan tool. Can communication with any of the control modules be established?

  • Control panel
  • Instrument panel cluster
  • BCM
  • Wireless access module
  • Headlight auto leveling control unit

Yes

=>Go to Control panel communication verification.

No

=>Go to Control panel inspection.

3. Control panel communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the control panel using a scan tool. Can communication with the control panel be established?

Yes

=>Go to Instrument panel cluster communication verification.

No

Go to Lost communication with the automatic air conditioning control unit.

4. Instrument panel cluster communication verification

1) Verify the communication status with the instrument panel cluster using the scan tool. Is communication with the instrument panel cluster established?

Yes

=>Go to BCM communication verification.

No

=>Go to Instrument panel cluster power supply and ground circuit inspection.

5. BCM communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the BCM using the scan tool. Is communication with the BCM established?

Yes

=>Go to Wireless access module communication verification.

No

Go to Lost communication with the BCM.

6. Wireless access module communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the wireless access module using a scan tool. Can communication with the wireless access module be established?

Yes

=>Go to Headlight auto leveling control unit communication verification.

No

Go to Lost communication with the wireless access module.

7. Headlight auto leveling control unit communication verification

1) Verify the communication status with the headlight auto leveling control unit using a scan tool. Can communication with the headlight auto leveling control unit be established?

Yes

=>Go to Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in Body CAN communication circuit.

No

Go to Lost communication with the headlight auto leveling control unit.

8. Instrument panel cluster power supply and ground circuit inspection

1) Inspect the power supply circuit and ground circuit of the instrument panel cluster for the following. Is the result normal?

  • Open circuit or high resistance
  • Short to ground in the power supply circuit
  • Poor connections at the body ground
  • Poor connections at the instrument panel cluster harness connector

Yes

=>Go to Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in Body CAN communication circuit.

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

9. Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in Body CAN communication circuit

1) Inspect for an intermittent short together between the CAN Low and CAN High circuits, and an intermittent short to ground or intermittent short to the power supply circuit. Is the result normal?

2) Inspect for intermittent open circuits in the CAN Low circuit and CAN High circuit in the control unit with which communication cannot be established. Is the result normal?

  • Open circuit or high resistance
  • Short together between circuits
  • Short to battery or short to ignition power supply circuit
  • Short to ground

3) Are all of the results normal?

Yes

=>Go to Repair verification.

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

10. Control panel inspection

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the control panel harness connector (B10).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Verify that communication can be established with the control units other than the control panel using a scan tool. Can communication with the control units other than the control panel be established?

Yes

=>Go to Control panel replacement.

No

=>Go to Instrument panel cluster inspection.

11. Instrument panel cluster inspection

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the instrument panel cluster harness connector (B7).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the instrument panel cluster using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the instrument panel cluster be established?

Yes

=>Go to Instrument panel cluster replacement.

No

=>Go to BCM inspection.

12. BCM inspection

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the BCM harness connector (B18).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the BCM using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the BCM be established?

Yes

=>Go to BCM replacement.

No

=>Go to Wireless access module inspection.

13. Wireless access module inspection

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the wireless access module harness connector (B13 or B15).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Verify that communication can be established with the control units other than the wireless access module using a scan tool. Can communication with the control units other than the wireless access module be established?

Yes

=>Go to Wireless access module replacement.

No

=>Go to Headlight auto leveling control unit inspection.

14. Headlight auto leveling control unit inspection

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the headlight auto leveling control unit harness connector (C99).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Check the communication status with control units other than the headlight auto leveling control unit using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the headlight auto leveling control unit be established?

Yes

=>Go to Headlight auto leveling control unit replacement.

No

=>Go to Body CAN communication circuit resistance check.

15. Body CAN communication circuit resistance check

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the central gateway control unit harness connector (B41).

3) Connect the instrument panel cluster harness connector (B7) and BCM harness connector (B18).

4) Measure the resistance at the instrument panel cluster (pins 21 and 22 of B7) from the backside of the instrument panel cluster harness connector with a DMM. Is the resistance within the specified range?

Note

  • The parallel resistance of the 120 Ω resistor in the instrument panel cluster and 120 Ω resistor in the BCM is 60 Ω.

Yes

No

=>Go to Instrument panel cluster internal resistance inspection.

16. Instrument panel cluster internal resistance inspection

1) Disconnect the BCM harness connector (B18).

2) Measure the resistance of the BCM harness connector (pins 3 and 4 of B18) with a DMM. Is the resistance within the specified range?

Yes
