Note

  • The installed devices vary depending on the vehicle. All the devices that may be connected to the CAN communication circuit are shown in the diagnostic procedure. Perform diagnosis only for the applicable device procedure.

1. Engine control system check

2. Scan tool communication verification

Caution

  • If the IDSS is in use, check for a malfunction in the IDSS interface equipment. If the IDSS interface equipment LED does not illuminate, refer to Scan tool does not power up, and inspect the power supply.

1) Connect the scan tool.

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Check the vehicle specifications and verify the status of communication with the following control modules using a scan tool. Can communication with any of the control modules be established?

  • ECM
  • Battery sensor
  • TCCM
  • Rear differential lock control unit
  • EHCU
  • Parking aid system control unit
  • TCM
  • SRS control unit
  • Control panel
  • eCall unit
  • BCM
  • Wireless access module
  • Headlight auto leveling control unit
  • Information module
  • Instrument panel cluster

Yes

=>Go to ECM communication verification.

No

=>Go to DLC inspection.

3. ECM communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the ECM using the scan tool. Can communication with the ECM be established?

Yes

=>Go to Battery sensor communication verification.

No

Go to Lost communication with the ECM.

4. Battery sensor communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the battery sensor using the scan tool. Can communication with the battery sensor be established?

Yes

=>Go to TCCM communication verification.

No

Go to Lost communication with the battery sensor.

5. TCCM communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the TCCM using the scan tool. Is communication with the TCCM established?

Yes

=>Go to Rear differential lock control unit communication verification.

No

Go to Lost communication with the TCCM.

6. Rear differential lock control unit communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the rear differential lock control unit using the scan tool. Can communication with the rear differential lock control unit be established?

Yes

=>Go to EHCU communication verification.

No

Go to Lost communication with the differential lock control unit.

7. EHCU communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the EHCU with a scan tool. Is communication with the EHCU established?

Yes

No

1) Verify that communication can be established with the parking aid system control unit using a scan tool. Can communication with the parking aid system control unit be established?

Yes

No

Yes

10. SRS control unit communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the SRS control unit using a scan tool. Can communication with the SRS control unit be established?

Yes

13. BCM communication verification

1) Check the communication status with the BCM using the scan tool. Is communication with the BCM established?

Yes

Yes

No

16. Information module communication verification

1) Verify that communication can be established with the information module using the scan tool. Can communication with the information module be established?

Yes

No

17. Instrument panel cluster communication verification

1) Verify the communication status with the instrument panel cluster using the scan tool. Is communication with the instrument panel cluster established?

Yes

=>Go to Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in CAN circuit.

No

=>Go to Instrument panel cluster power supply and ground circuit inspection.

18. Instrument panel cluster power supply and ground circuit inspection

1) Inspect the power supply circuit and ground circuit of the instrument panel cluster for the following. Is the result normal?

  • Open circuit or high resistance
  • Short to ground in the power supply circuit
  • Poor connections at the body ground
  • Poor connections at the instrument panel cluster harness connector

Yes

=>Go to DLC inspection.

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

19. Inspection for open circuit and short circuit in CAN circuit

1) Inspect for an intermittent short together between the CAN Low and CAN High circuits, and an intermittent short to ground or intermittent short to the power supply circuit. Is the result normal?

2) Inspect for intermittent open circuits in the CAN Low circuit and CAN High circuit in the control unit with which communication cannot be established. Is the result normal?

3) Are all of the results normal?

Yes

=>Go to Repair verification.

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

20. DLC inspection

1) Inspect for poor connections at the DLC (pins 6 and 14 of C19). Is the connection status normal?

Yes

=>Go to ECM inspection.

No

Repair the connections as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

21. ECM inspection

1) Turn OFF the ignition switch.

2) Disconnect the ECM harness connector (C9).

3) Turn ON the ignition switch.

4) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the ECM using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the ECM be established?

Yes

=>Go to ECM replacement.

No

=>Go to TCCM inspection.

22. Battery sensor inspection

1) Disconnect the battery sensor harness connector (C49).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the battery sensor using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the battery sensor be established?

Yes

=>Go to Battery sensor replacement.

No

=>Go to TCCM inspection.

23. TCCM inspection

1) Disconnect the TCCM harness connector (C15).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the TCCM using a scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the TCCM be established?

Yes

=>Go to TCCM replacement.

No

=>Go to Rear differential lock control unit inspection.

24. Rear differential lock control unit inspection

1) Disconnect the rear differential lock control unit harness connector (C57).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Verify that communication can be established with control units other than the rear differential lock control unit using the scan tool. Can communication with control units other than the rear differential lock control unit be established?

Yes

=>Go to Rear differential lock control unit replacement.

No

=>Go to EHCU inspection.

25. EHCU inspection

1) Disconnect the EHCU harness connector (C13).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

No

26. Parking aid system control unit inspection

1) Disconnect the parking aid system control unit harness connector (C16).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

28. Inspection of steering angle sensor

36. Audio center unit inspection

1) Disconnect the audio center unit harness connector (B49).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

37. Instrument panel cluster inspection

1) Disconnect the instrument panel cluster harness connector (B7).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

38. Instrument panel cluster internal resistance inspection

1) Disconnect the ECM harness connector (C9).

2) Measure the resistance of the ECM harness connector (pins 14 and 16 of C9) with a DMM. Is the resistance within the specified range?

Value: 110 to 130 Ω

Yes

=>Go to ECM internal resistance inspection.

No

=>Go to Instrument panel cluster replacement.

39. ECM internal resistance inspection

1) Disconnect the instrument panel cluster harness connector (B7).

2) Measure the resistance of the instrument panel cluster harness connector (pins 21 and 22 of B7) with a DMM. Is the resistance within the specified range?

Value: 110 to 130 Ω

Yes

Repair the short to ground, short to the power supply circuit, open circuit, or the short together between the CAN Low circuit and CAN High circuit in the control unit.
