Warning
•  Never dispose of an air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt that has not been operated (deployed). Otherwise, they may accidently operate (deploy) and cause serious injury.
Caution
•  When disposing of any air bag modules or pre-tensioner seat belts, activate (deploy) them by following the deployment procedures below.
•  To dispose of an activated (deployed) air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt, refer to [AIR BAG MODULE AND PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT DISPOSAL PROCEDURES].(See AIR BAG MODULE AND PRE-TENSIONER SEAT BELT DISPOSAL PROCEDURES [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)
Note
•  The air bag module, the pre-tensioner seat belt, and the connector part of the processing wiring harness are melted by high heat when the inflator is activated (deployed).
•  The SRS air bag system can be identified by whether or not the seat track position sensor is present.

―  Two-step deployment control system: With seat track position sensor

Preparation Before Servicing

1.  Switch the main power OFF.

2.  Disconnect the negative lead-acid battery terminal and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE LEAD-ACID BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION.)

3.  Cut the location of the repair part [BCKA-67SH2] as shown in the figure and remove the vinyl tube.

4.  Check the rib shape of the connector and select a wiring harness that matches the inflator.

5.  Connect the wiring harness selected in Step 4 to a wire that meets all of the following requirements. (See REPAIR CONNECTOR REPLACEMENT/WIRING HARNESS CONNECTION.)

•  Conductor cross sectional area 0.5 mm2{0.0008 in2}} or more (conductor diameter 0.85 mm {0.033 in})
•  Length 6 m {19 ft} or more

Warning
•  When connecting the processing harness to the inflator, the inflator may unexpectedly activate (deploy) due to static electricity and cause injury. Before connecting the processing wiring harness to the inflator, peel off the end coating of the wires and short-circuit them by twisting them.

6.  Before connecting to the inflator, peel off the end coating of the wires and short-circuit them by twisting them to prevent accidental explosion due to static electricity.

7.  Activate (deploy) the relevant air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt.

Activation (Deployment) Inside The Vehicle


Driver-side air bag module

Warning
•  The driver-side air bag module is a dual inflator type. If the inflators are activated (deployed) one by one, the other side may be activated (deployed) unexpectedly. To prevent injury when disposing of the air bag module, always activate (deploy) both inflators on the driver-side air bag module using the following procedure.

1.  Remove the driver-side air bag module.(See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

2.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the driver-side air bag module.

3.  Install the driver-side air bag module.(See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

4.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

5.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

6.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  Check that the air bag module makes two activation sounds (explosion sounds). If there is no or only one activation sound (explosion sound), the inflators on both sides have not activated (deployed) properly, and may cause injury due to unexpected activation (deployment). If the two operation (explosive) sounds are not heard, perform Step 6 again. If the two activation sounds (explosion sounds) cannot be verified even after performing Step 6 again, wait for 30 min or more and then approach the air bag module.
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Passenger-side air bag module

1.  Remove the glove compartment.(See GLOVE COMPARTMENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

3.  Disconnect the connectors.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the passenger-side air bag module.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Knee air bag module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Selector lever knob (See SELECTOR LEVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [A71M].)
(2)  Shift panel (See SHIFT PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Console panel (See CONSOLE PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Passenger-side decoration panel (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Driver-side scuff plate (See SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  Driver-side front side trim (See FRONT SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Driver-side lower panel (See DRIVER-SIDE LOWER PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Remove the knee air bag module.(See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

3.  Remove the knee air bag module from the air bag case.

4.  Remove the clips.

5.  Remove the nuts.

6.  Remove the cover.

7.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

8.  Disconnect the connectors.

9.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the knee air bag module.

10.  Install the cover.

11.  Install the nuts.

12.  Install the knee air bag module.(See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

13.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

14.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

15.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Side air bag module for front passenger

1.  Remove the front seat.(See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the front seat back trim and seat back pad.(See FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

3.  Remove the side air bag module for front passenger. (See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE FOR FRONT PASSENGER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

4.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

5.  Disconnect the connectors.

6.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the side air bag module for front passenger.

7.  Install the side air bag module for front passenger. (See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE FOR FRONT PASSENGER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

8.  Install the front seat.(See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

9.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

10.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

11.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Warning
•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Far side air bag module

1.  Remove the front seat.(See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the front seat back trim and seat back pad.(See FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

3.  Remove the far side air bag module. (See FAR SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

4.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

5.  Disconnect the connectors.

6.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the far side air bag module.

7.  Install the far side air bag module. (See FAR SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

8.  Install the front seat.(See FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

9.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

10.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

11.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Side air bag module for rear passenger

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Scuff plate (See SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Rear package tray (See REAR PACKAGE TRAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Rear pillar trim (See REAR PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Rear seat cushion (See REAR SEAT CUSHION REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  Rear seat back (See REAR SEAT BACK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Tire house trim(See TIRE HOUSE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

3.  Disconnect the connectors.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the side air bag module for rear passenger.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Curtain air bag module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Front map light(See FRONT MAP LIGHT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)
(2)  Sensor cover (See SENSOR COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Sunvisor (See SUNVISOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Assist handle (See ASSIST HANDLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Front pillar trim (See FRONT PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  Roof side trim (See ROOF SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Rear package tray (See REAR PACKAGE TRAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(8)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(9)  Rear pillar trim (See REAR PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the connector stopper plate.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the curtain air bag module.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

•  The air bag module is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Front pre-tensioner seat belt

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Rear door lower trim (See REAR DOOR LOWER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Front seat belt (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Rear door upper trim (See REAR DOOR UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Front seat belt retractor (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Service hole cover (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the connector stopper plate.

3.  Disconnect the connectors.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the front pre-tensioner seat belt.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

•  The pre-tensioner seat belt is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Rear pre-tensioner seat belt

1.  Remove the following parts:

(1)  Rear package tray (See REAR PACKAGE TRAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(2)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the connector stopper plate.

3.  Disconnect the connectors.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the rear pre-tensioner seat belt.

5.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the vehicle.

6.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

•  The pre-tensioner seat belt is very hot immediately after activation (deployment) and can cause burns if touched. Leave the actuator alone for approx. 15 min or more after activation (deployment) to let it cool down before handling.


Activation (Deployment) Outside The Vehicle


Driver-side air bag module

Warning
•  The driver-side air bag module is a dual inflator type. If the inflators are activated (deployed) one by one, the other side may be activated (deployed) unexpectedly. To prevent injury when disposing of the air bag module, always activate (deploy) both inflators on the driver-side air bag module using the following procedure.

1.  Remove the driver-side air bag module.(See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

2.  Wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) three times in the position shown in the figure on the driver-side air bag module.

3.  Wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times in the position shown in the figure on the driver-side air bag module.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the driver-side air bag module.

•  If the air bag module is not securely fastened to the wheel, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). The air bag module is securely fixed to the wheel with the pad side up.

5.  With the pad side of the driver-side air bag module facing up, place it in the center of the wheel, and wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

6.  Stack three tires without wheels on top of the tire with the driver-side air bag module, and stack another tire with a wheel on the very top.

7.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

8.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the tires.

9.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

10.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Passenger-side air bag module

1.  Remove the glove compartment.(See GLOVE COMPARTMENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the passenger-side air bag module.(See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

3.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the passenger-side air bag module.

•  If the air bag module is not securely fastened to the tire, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). The air bag module is securely fixed to the tire with the pad facing the center of the tire.

4.  With the pad surface of the passenger-side air bag module facing the center of the tire, wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section of 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

5.  Place two tires without wheels on top of each other, place a tire with the passenger-side air bag module fixed, place another tire without a wheel on top of it, and place another tire with a wheel on top.

6.  Secure the tire with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

Knee air bag module

1.  Remove the following parts:

(2)  Console panel (See CONSOLE PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Passenger-side decoration panel (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

(5)  Driver-side front side trim (See FRONT SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Remove the knee air bag module.(See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

3.  Remove the knee air bag module from the air bag case.

4.  Remove the clip.

8.  Disconnect the connector.

9.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the knee air bag module.

2.  Remove the front seat back pad and front seat back trim as a single unit.(See FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

3.  Remove the side air bag module for front passenger. (See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE FOR FRONT PASSENGER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

4.  Install the nuts.

5.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the side air bag module for front passenger.

2.  Remove the front seat back trim and seat back pad.(See FRONT SEAT BACK TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

3.  Remove the far side air bag module. (See FAR SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

4.  Install the nuts.

5.  Pull out the connector stopper plate using a flathead screwdriver.

6.  Disconnect the connectors.

7.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the far side air bag module.

Warning
•  If the air bag module is not securely fastened to the tire, the tire may fall due to impact and cause injury during activation (deployment). The air bag module is securely fixed to the tire with the pad facing the center of the tire.

8.  With the pad surface of the far side air bag module facing the center of the tire, wrap the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more) four times to secure it.

9.  Place two tires without wheels on top of each other, place a tire with the far side air bag module fixed, place another tire without a wheel on top of it, and place another tire with a wheel on top.

10.  Secure the tires with the automotive wiring harness (cross section 1.25 mm2{0.002 in2} or more).

11.  Verify that all persons are standing at least 6 m {19 ft} away from the tires.

12.  Untwist the processing wiring harness.

13.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the lead-acid battery and activate the inflator.

Side air bag module for rear passenger

1.  Remove the following parts:

(2)  Rear package tray (See REAR PACKAGE TRAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(3)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Rear pillar trim (See REAR PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Rear seat cushion (See REAR SEAT CUSHION REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  Rear seat back (See REAR SEAT BACK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Tire house trim(See TIRE HOUSE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [(E)].)

2.  Remove the side air bag module for rear passenger. (See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE FOR REAR PASSENGER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

3.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the side air bag module for rear passenger.

(3)  Sunvisor (See SUNVISOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(4)  Assist handle (See ASSIST HANDLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(5)  Front pillar trim (See FRONT PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(6)  Roof side trim (See ROOF SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(7)  Rear package tray (See REAR PACKAGE TRAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(8)  Trunk side upper trim (See TRUNK SIDE UPPER TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(9)  Rear pillar trim (See REAR PILLAR TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)
(10)  Headliner (See HEADLINER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2.  Remove the curtain air bag module.(See CURTAIN AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (E)].)

Warning
•  Be careful not to crush the pipe on the cut surface of the curtain air bag module. If it is crushed, the interior pressure of the pipe will build up and can cause it to explode during air bag module operation (deployment).

3.  Cut off the air bag part of the curtain air bag module at the position shown in the figure.

4.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the curtain air bag module.

2.  Remove the front seat belt. (See FRONT SEAT BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

3.  Connect the processing wiring harness to the front pre-tensioner seat belt.
